Vancouver Officials Are Investigating A BMX Rider's Mysterious Death After Falling Off A Seawall
Officials are now trying to determine the cause of death.
A tragic incident took place over the weekend that left a BMX rider dead after failing a stunt in Vancouver near the convention center. According to officials, the man died after the stunt went wrong. Police and the B.C. Coroners Service are now investigating the accident to determine the cause of death.
BC Coroners Service confirmed via email to Narcity that a man in his early '30s died after attempting a stunt while riding his BMX bike along the Vancouver seawall. The incident took place on Sunday evening Aug. 11 at approximately 8:30 p.m.
The 30-something-year-old man was allegedly travelling along the walkway near Canada Place when he left the pavement and fell into the ocean.
The B.C. Coroners Service is now investigating the cause of the man's death as well as how it all happened. A spokesperson with the service told Narcity that at this time, there is not much information as the investigation is in the early stages.
According to a statement provided to CBC News by the Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre, the biker was allegedly attempting a stunt by jumping off the third level of the seawall adjacent to the flight centre.
According to Global News, paramedics and first responders were called to the scene regarding a possible drowning. The man was then transported to the hospital in stable condition.
CTV News has since been able to speak with eyewitnesses. According to the news outlet, a bystander jumped into the water and rescued the man. The bystander then performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived on the scene.
While officials have not confirmed details on the incident, CTV News stated that a witness described seeing paramedics and firefighters perform CPR on the person while he was lying on the ground without a shirt.
According to that same bystander, after several minutes, first responders stopped and covered the person with a tarp. Another person claimed to have seen the man be put on a stretcher.
While officials have confirmed that the man fell into the water, the exact cause of death is unknown at this time. The B.C. Coroners Service and the Vancouver police are now working alongside one another during this time.
In an email provided to Narcity, the B.C. Coroners Service stated that they are unable to confirm if the man was performing a stunt or not at this time.
