Environment Canada Has Issued Rare Weather Alert For Metro Vancouver Warning For Freezing Rain And Snowstorm
Environment Canada weather warning Vancouver about freezing rain and snowfall.
Vancouver has seen snowstorms and rainstorms, but we rarely see "freezing rain" hit the city. Well, it looks like the winter weather in Vancouver is completely unpredictable because Environment Canada has issued a rare weather alert for Metro Vancouver warning about freezing rain and snowstorm coming to the city tonight. The weather alert was released earlier this morning on Thursday, February 14.
Yesterday we saw sunny, clear skies in the city, and it seemed like the BC snowstorm of 2019 could be over. However, winter still has some more intense weather to hail down onto the city. Vancouver is expected to be hit with snow and even freezing rain starting tonight.
"Snow will develop later this afternoon and has potential to be fairly heavy around the early evening rush hour," reads the weather alert from Environment Canada. "Snow should begin to transition to rain later in the day on Friday".
However, the rainfall is expected to not be like the regular rainfall Vancouver typically receives. "With the onset of milder air with this system and prolonged outflow conditions a risk of freezing rain will exist tonight and Friday morning," warns Environment Canada.
The reason for all this? Environment Canada explains that "Another area of low pressure will approach the south coast later today". According to them, Metro Vancouver is continuing to be hit by "arctic air" which will bring temperatures close to freezing tonight, which explains the risk of freezing rain.
There is expected to be another dump of snowfall in the city starting tonight through Friday. Environment Canada warns that there will be 5 to 10 cm of snowfall in Metro Vancouver by Friday morning.
Environment Canada has issued a weather warning for the following areas:
- Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
- City of Vancouver - including Burnaby and New Westminster
- Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
- Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
- North Shore - including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
Environment Canada is now warning commuters to be extra careful because of difficult winter driving conditions. "There is potential for snow to be fairly heavy during the late afternoon and early evening rush hour," reads the weather alert.
"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations".
This week marks the. Parts of the city even .
However, there is some relief from the winter weather coming this weekend! On Saturday and Sunday, it's expected to be mostly sunny and temperatures will finally be above freezing, according to Accuweather.
Until then, the Vancouver winter weather is the perfect reason to cozy up to some Netflix and hot chocolate.
