It wasn’t that long ago, Vancouver was seeing wildflowers bloom while the rest of Canada froze their Tim Hortons off. Now, our beautiful city is going to be seeing some seriously cold weather accompanied by snow. In fact, it is going to be so chilly, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver and, to be honest, most of BC. It's time to dig out the toques and mittens, Old Man Winter has finally come to our city.

The statement was issued at around 5:45 AM this morning for a number of areas including the city of Vancouver which covers Burnaby and New Westminster, Metro Vancouver’s northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, the southeast including Surrey and Langley, the southwest including Richmond and Delta, and North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver. It seems as though no place is safe from this inevitable cold.

According to the statement, much colder conditions will continue this morning over the South Coast. In fact, the temperature will be so cold, we could be seeing anywhere from five to 10 degrees below the seasonal average. This means that these conditions will be the coldest we have seen this season!

The cold air is expected to continue into the latter half of next week, which means that you won’t want to put away the parka quite yet. To top off the cold front, winds are expected to give “blustery conditions” in exposed areas near the mainland inlets until Monday. In fact, the winds have already been so strong that the Canada Coast Gaurd has tweeted out a picture of a boat in Vancouver that was dragged to anchor.

If the cold air and wind weren't enough, Mother Nature will be topping things off with moisture that has the potential to turn into snow. The statement claims that anywhere from one to five centimeters is expected, with up to 10 cm accumulating in Howe Sound.

At least Vancouver isn’t alone in this winter warning. In fact, a majority of BC has been issued weather advisories and statements from Environment Canada. Altogether, 26 statements have been issued for various locations around BC that include warnings based on snowfall, extreme cold, and arctic outflow.
