Vancouver Already Had More Anti-Asian Hate Crimes In 2020 Than All Of Last Year Combined
There have already been 20 this year.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, there has been a rise in Vancouver's anti-Asian hate crimes. In fact, there have been more hate crimes this year than in all of 2019 and it’s only May. The city's mayor is now condemning the public for their actions.
Vancouver is no stranger to crime and since the pandemic started, many businesses have had toto keep criminals out.
But a new type of crime is on the rise that is targeting a specific racial group.
According to News 1130, Asian hate crimes have been on the rise in Vancouver since the pandemic started.
There was even hate crime caught on camera that showed asuffering from dementia.
The attacks don’t stop there as Vancouver police told News 1130 that there have been a total of 20 anti-Asian hate crimes reported to police this year alone.
To put this into perspective, in 2019, there was a total of 12.
This means that in 2020, there have been more of this type of targeted hate crimes than in the entire last year and it is only Friday, May 1.
In addition, it looks like most of those instances happened in one month alone.
In April of this year, 15 hate crimes were reported to Vancouver Police of which 11 were anti-Asian.
got wind of this and expressed this disappointment on Twitter.
In a tweet released on Friday, May 1, Stewart wrote that May was Asian Heritage Month.
“This year, I ask all of us — no matter our ancestry — take a moment to reflect on how richer our lives are for living in a city with such vibrant historical and present-day connections to Asia,” reads the tweet.
In an attached document, Stewart wrote that hate of any kind “has no place in our city” and that “these actions will not be tolerated.”
He noted that everyone in the city is better than this and he is encouraging everyone to actively denounce hateful actions like the ones that have been displayed.
