Loud, explosive noises are keeping Vancouverites up all night. Since around May 15, locals have been taking to social media to complain about alarming noises being heard from around the city. People have figured out what the Vancouver noises could be, but they still don't know where it's coming from.

The overall consensus seems to be that the noises are not coming from gunshots, but firecrackers going off around various parts in the city.

A Twitter account named "Stay At Home" said, "Bear bangers being set off in the DTES used to happen once or twice a week and now it’s multiple times per night and I am so tired."

In the replies, other people are echoing this same feeling.

"These just woke me up too. I’ve counted 6 tonight," said another user.

Someone else said, "It’s wake my kids up and we called police and I don’t understand why they can’t find them and do anything about it."

In another post, an account named VanMusic tweeted, "I’m interested in understanding why there are so many loud disturbing bangs (daily almost hourly) happening in the #DTES over the last few months and why the Vancouver PD have not dealt with this problem and what they plan to do about it?"

In a statement sent to Narcity, the Vancouver Police Department's media relations officer, Sergeant Aaron Roed, said that they're receiving reports of "bear bangers" going off around the city.

The majority of these reports are coming from the Downtown Eastside (DTES) area, he said.

He went on to explain that bear bangers are like firecrackers that can be bought at places like the Canadian Tire and similar businesses.

One Twitter user is urging the police and the City of Vancouver to take action, saying, "Put an end to the bear bangers in the DTES. They are being set off every 10 minutes since 10pm. This is not okay."

But Roed from VPD said that they get routine notifications of these alarming sounds and said that the complaints haven't gone up in the past little while.

He added, "this is an ongoing issue with Patrol officers being notified of these loud bangs and people lighting off Bear bangers."

Locals, in turn, haven't been shy about going on social media and voicing their concerns.

Roed also said that while they can confirm that the sounds are coming from bear bangers, they don't know who has been firing them off. They're also unsure why there have been more bangs recently.

Roed said that public safety is Vancouver Police's main concern and when incidents are reported, they'll look into each and every one of them.

But if people do spot bear bangers being lit, they need to either contact the police or call the City of Vancouver at 311.
