Vancouver Studio Behind "Sonic The Hedgehog" Makeover Shuttered Before Premiere
They took it from creepy to cool!
A popular production studio called Moving Pictures Films has reportedly closed its Vancouver office. Since opening in 2007, they have worked on countless hit films. The Vancouver studio gave Sonic the Hedgehog a makeover to make it palatable for fans. There were tons of Twitter users who outraged at the original look of the nostalgic spikey blue Sega character, and this studio made it watchable for fans.
In the original trailer, the way Sonic looked was called everything from "creepy" to "hideous." After the criticism, the movie got a face-lift and a much more friendly-looking Sonic without human-like teeth was promised.
The company behind the new look of the highly-anticipated film unexpectedly closed its doors according to reports and an email that's making the rounds on social media.
In a Reddit post titled "hearing some MPC gossip," a Redditor said that they just "heard news that they are closing the Vancouver branch and huge layoffs in Montreal."
According to an Imgur post showing the email, the "Vancouver studio will cease operations effective immediately."
This news comes in the weeks just before Christmas and employees have reportedly had little to no warning that the studio would close.
The email also says that part of the reason the office is closing is that they want to pursue "more attractive opportunities in other locations."
The Vancouver Sun reported that by Wednesday, December 11 the doors to the MPC office in Vancouver's Yaletown neighbourhood were locked according to Brenda Bailey, executive director of DigiBC.
It's not clear how many people will be losing their jobs right before the holidays, but Bailey told the Sun that this was a "real loss for Vancouver."
MPC has not commented yet on the closure and Narcity will update this article. According to their website, they are hiring for positions in their London and Montreal offices.
Vancouver is a huge hub for film production, especially for animation and special effects.
Some of thewas done here in Vancouver, too.
MPC has worked on tons of films over the years including titles like Bladerunner 2049, The Lion King, Detective Pikachu, and Life of Pi.
Sonic the Hedgehog will come to theatres in Canada on February 14, 2020.
