Canadians continue to be affected by VIA Rail cancellations caused by ongoing protests. While some services have resumed, others have remained shut down. Some will not be back up and running until at least February 26.

According to an email from VIA Rail, more than 111,000 people have been affected by the now 599 cancelled trains.

Service between Montreal and Quebec City was set to resume today but has been further postponed until the end of the day on February 21.

Ontario's trains have fared better, with service resuming on the Toronto-London-Windsor, Toronto-Niagara Falls, and Toronto-Sarnia lines on February 20.

Partial weekday service is also back on from Montreal to Ottawa. Weekend trains will be running again on February 22.

Trips cancelled until February 26 include the Canadian (Toronto to Vancouver), Prince Rupert to Prince George, and Winnipeg to The Pas.

February 23 is expected to see The Ocean trains (Montreal to Halifax) resume running, as well as Senneterre-Jonquière, Québec City-Windsor corridor (except Montréal-Québec), and Montréal-Québec trains running again.

The ongoing issues with VIA Rail are due to continuing protests in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs who oppose pipeline construction on their land in British Columbia.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed his intention to end the protests through the right kind of solution.

"Over the last 11 days, our government has been working on a path forward even as many have been saying we should give up," Trudeau said, according to Global News, "We know what’s at stake. We know we cannot afford to fail."

VIA Rail has also expressed their wish for the protests to come to an end, saying "we remain hopeful for an end to the situation as soon as possible and encourage all relevant parties to continue their efforts towards a peaceful resolution."

Customers who have had their trips affected by the VIA Rail cancellations are eligible to receive refunds from the company, with some conditions.
