A number of parents had their worst nightmares confirmed after a Canadian English teacher was filmed abusing children at a daycare in Japan. One concerned coworker decided to take matters into their own hands and began secretly filming the Canadian. The teacher eventually had to face the consequences and he was fired.

Darrell Norris worked alongside a Canadian English teacher from March 20, 2018, to March 20, 2019. Both of them were hired to teach English to pre-school aged kids at Little GEMS International School in Kitakyushu, Japan. According to Norris, the teacher had been instructing at the school for at least five years prior to them working together.

Norris first noticed the Canadian teachers “rough” behaviour towards the children early on. Norris told CTV that he had low patience with the kids and would “grab them and slam them down.”

After witnessing the child abuse one too many times, Norris decided to tell a fellow Japanese teacher. She replied that she would “keep an eye on it.”

Months went by and Norris still saw the physical assaults happening; this time on a daily basis. This is when Norris began filming the teacher's actions using a spy cam attached to a pen.

In an attempt to raise awareness, Norris posted the video on Facebook recently on May 12, 2019. The video quickly went viral and now has over 700 shares.

In the video, you can see the teacher reading a book to a group of kids. Only a few seconds into the video, the teacher hits a pre-school aged child on the lower half of his body. After hitting him, you can see the teacher lift up the child with force to sit him on the ground.

The boy begins to cry and the teacher yells “why did you do that?” He then asks another boy if he was okay as the child that was abused was allegedly tugging on his shirt.

The video is accompanied with a caption about what Norris encountered:

"1 year I witnessed 1 teacher hit, drag, kick, pinch, scratch, throw, gag, humiliate, and terrify kindergarten kids out of anger and frustration in the school where I worked, and a lot of it happened in front of the boss," wrote Norris.

"When I first started working there and saw this, I couldn’t believe it. I thought that this was a part of Japanese culture. But after talking to other teachers, parents, friends, and even strangers in public, I realized these kinds of things weren’t normal".

While this video is going viral and circulating around many Japanese media outlets, it is not the only video in existence. A longer compilation of incidents was also posted by the New York Post.

In this one minute and 16-second video, you can see the teacher's face. It shows the teacher throwing toys and other things at kids, slapping them, picking them up forcibly, and threatening to put them “in the box.”

You can watch that video here.

According to Japan Today, the teacher, believed to be in his 40’s, was suspended as of May 14, 2019. CTV reports that Little Gems International School in Kitakyushu will permanently close on July 20, once classes are finished for the year.
