The Raptors Just Released Their Classic Edition Jersey & Fans Aren't Happy With It
The new jerseys don't feature the signature championship patch.
The Toronto Raptors just announced the launch of their new Raptor's Classic Edition Jersey. The throwback item, which has been much anticipated by Raptors fans, features a Dino white design and is currently going on RealSports for $139.99. The jersey is sure to excite die-hard supporters of the franchise. However, some fans couldn’t help but notice an important detail missing.
Raptors fans were quick to point out that the jerseys do not feature an NBA gold patch, a signature for champion teams. “Put the gold patch on it, and I’ll buy it,” wrote one Twitter user. “No gold patch no buy my guy” another disappointed fan posted.
The NBA first introduced a gold patch during the 2014-2015 season. According to Medium, the gold tab, which is located on the back collar of player jerseys, was inspired by the World Cup. The patches serve as a reminder of how difficult it is to win an NBA Championship. Nearly half of the league has never accomplished the feat.
Winning the championships for the first time in NBA history this year, Raptors fans were hoping that this new jersey would help pay tribute to the success that the team has had.
While some were mad about the gold tab, other fans complained about the jersey’s lack of a purple variant, as the jersey is only available in white.
One Twitter user even stating, "Where the purple variations at tho."
The Raptors first teased the nostalgic jerseywith a series of teaser videos showcasing a new retro feel for the 2019-2020 season. The new jersey paid homage to the team’s original look from the franchise's first season back in 1995.
Aalso had fans excited due to its obvious throwback to the Raptors first appearance in the NBA. The new look features the team’s signature claw marks, which work into the centre court, which of course features the franchise-famous dinosaur logo.
Unlike the jerseys, the court isn't confirmed by the Raptors or the NBA, but given the lean towards nostalgia this year, I think it’s safe to say that it has a pretty good chance of becoming a reality.
