A lot has definitely happened in the last year. The world is dealing with a pandemic, as well as protests against systemic racism. However, today Canadians are also remembering a happy occasion: the 2019 Toronto Raptors championship. Exactly one year ago, the Raps became the newest Toronto team to win a sports championship, ending the city's 27-year dry spell since the Jays won the World Series in 1993. June 13, 2019 saw the team take victory over the Golden State Warriors in a 114-110 Game 6 win. Mayor John Tory shared his support for the team in several different ways, including wearing his Raptors jacket during a visit to the St. Lawrence Market. "One year ago, our @Raptors made history as the first Canadian team ever to win the @NBA Championship," Tory wrote in a tweet, "To this day, our @Raptors remain NBA champs and I can’t wait to cheer them on again. #WeTheNorth." He also shared a photo of the famous Toronto sign, which will be lit up in black and red tonight in celebration. The Raptors also shared a YouTube video on their own account entitled "Forever, The Day," which has fans sharing their memories of the celebrated final game. The Toronto Sign will be lit in @Raptors red and black tonight to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of our @Raptors’ NBA Championship victory and remember some of the joy and excitement that filled our city only one short year ago. #WeTheNorth #WeTheChamps pic.twitter.com/xfCafuoUXn— John Tory (@JohnTory) June 13, 2020 It wouldn't be a true celebration of the team, however, without hearing from superfan Nav Bhatia, who was courtside at every single game. Even though we're apart, we can remember how wonderful it is when we are united.
