This Tennis Player Sipping Maple Syrup Mid-Match Is A Canadian Heritage Moment (VIDEO)
"This is Buddy the Elf, what's your favourite colour?"
Every so often, something happens which virtually redefines just how Canadian Canada can be. Well, strap yourselves in, because a video of Vasek Pospisil drinking maple syrup shows the Canadian star sipping on the most True North of refreshers during a break in play in a match on February 9. Fans are hailing the footage as a modern Canadian heritage moment, and it looks like 2020 might have peaked already.
Cameras caught the moment during the B.C. native's match at the Open Sud de France finals on Sunday, February 9.
While he was ultimately defeated by Frenchman Gael Monfils in the final of that tournament, one thing he did during a changeover certainly caught the attention of viewers.
While resting, the 29-year-old Pospisil whipped out some good ol' Canadian maple syrup and began sipping straight from the bottle as if he was Buddy the Elf himself.
After watching that, we're surprised he didn't have any candy, candy canes, or candy corn with him, too.
Fair play to Pospisil's fellow Canadian player Felix Auger Aliassime, who named and shamed his compatriot on Twitter on Sunday.
"Vasek Pospisil straight up drinking Maple Syrup during the match 🍁 love to see it 😅," read FAA's caption alongside a still of Pospisil in full swig mode.
Then, on Sunday, ATP Tennis' partner account Tennis TV shared a video of Pospisil's liquid lunch.
"You can take the man out of Canada... but you can't take Canada out of the man 😉🇨🇦 Nice maple syrup, @vasek.pospisil?!" said the video's caption.
And after the moment went down a storm on social media, Pospisil himself had to acknowledge the most Canadian of clips.
"Maple Syrup: Best Sports performance drink. Anti-cancerous properties. Rich in nutrients & minerals. Fights against terrorists. Shockingly good in coffee. A great friend. You’re Welcome, World," the player tweeted on Monday afternoon.
And as well as Pospisil himself and Auger Aliassime, even the 2019 queen of Canadian tennis, Bianca Andreescu, commented on the video, as well as congratulating him for reaching the finals.
"Doesn’t get more Canadian than that. congrats on reaching finals," Andreescu wrote.
Now, Andreescu herself is no stranger to being labelled a Canadian heritage moment.a few months ago was an iconic Canuck sporting moment.
And fans and viewers on social media see to agree with her that this is about as iconic a Canadian video as you're likely to see.
And, yes, there were plenty of Elf comparisons, too.
Maple syrup may not be considered the typical "performance enhancer" for athletes, but for Pospisil, it clearly doesn't only belong on pancakes and waffles.
As one tweeter suggested, maybe Vasek's on the hunt for an endorsement?
Or, perhaps, he's just more Canadian than literally any of us.
Anyway, it could be worse. He could be. Never again.
