From grand ice castles and millions of twinkling lights to some of the cutest shopping opportunities in the province, you’re sure to find a few markets and events you'll definitely want to hit up.

Every year, Christmas seems of sneaks up on us, and before we know it the chance to get out and experience all of Alberta’s holiday magic comes to a sudden end.

This year, why not get on top of the fun nice and early so you don’t miss out on some serious festive action.

We’ve brought together some of the best and brightest holiday markets and events in the province so that you don’t miss a thing.

Banff Christmas Market

Why You Need To Go: This cozy outdoor Christmas market is full of holiday charm. Santa himself shows up with a sleigh full of handcrafted gifts. There's food, drinks, and a warm fire for you to enjoy as well. 

Lions Festival of Lights

When: Saturday, November 30 until Wednesday, January 8

Address: Confederation Park, Calgary, AB

Why You Need To Go: You can drive through 500,000 twinkling lights at Alberta's largest free drive-by Christmas light showcase. This magical holiday display is sure to raise your spirits.

The Spirit of Christmas

Why You Need To Go: This festive store looks like it came straight out of a movie set. You can browse the decorations and maybe even find a special something for that special someone while you're at it.

Calgary ZooLights

Price: $19.95

When: Friday, November 22 until Saturday, January 4

Address: 210 St. George's Dr. NE, Calgary, AB

Why You Need To Go: This long-standing event is a holiday tradition for many, and we understand why. The magical lights could put even Scrooge in the holiday spirit.

Winter Lights Festival

Why You Need To Go: This Japanese Garden transforms into the most spectacular oasis of lights. Once you're here be sure to try the maple matcha cookies and a tasty hot drink.

Why You Need To Go: A candlelit walk through a wintery garden? Um, yes, please. It doesn't get more romantic than this. There will be bonfires, hot apple cider, singing, and ice sculptures too.

Noel Festival

Price: From $19.99

When: Thursday, November 28 until Tuesday, December 31

Address: 1410 Olympic Way SE, Calgary, AB

Why You Need To Go: This is Calgary's only indoor light park and Christmas market. You can wander through a 250-foot interactive light tunnel, enjoy boozy drinks and shop for artisan gifts.

Victoria Park IceWay

Price: Free

When: TBD, the IceWay is weather dependant

Why You Need To Go: You can skate through a rainbow of lights on this incredible outdoor skating trail. It has not yet been confirmed if the rainbow lights will return again this year.

CP Holiday Train

Address: Various Alberta stops

Why You Need To Go: The iconic Cp Holiday Train is a festive staple that you won't want to miss. And with multiple stops in Alberta this year, you won't have to.

Ice Castles

Why You Need To Go: You can wander through marvellous hand-crafted ice castles, down ice slides, through frozen tunnels and more. Many of the ice sculptures are illuminated by LED lights as well.

Mountaintop Christmas

When: Saturday, November 16 until Monday, December 30

Why You Need To Go: You can take in breathtaking rooftop views of snowy mountain tops, decorate festive cookies, take photos with Santa and more at Banff's famous Mountaintop Christmas.

Why You Need To Go: The unique light installations at the Edmonton Valley Zoo are something to marvel at. You can explore all the beautiful lights while you sip hot chocolate, admire the animals. You can even go for a nice winter skate.
