You Can Have Coffee With Pot-Bellied Pigs At This Adorable Ontario Rescue
We don't snout that you'll love this!
Oink, oink! If you have a passion for potbellied pigs and a caffeine obsession that just won’t quit, then we’ve found the perfect place for you. Just over an hour from Toronto, you’ll find an Ontario pig rescue that lets you sip coffee while surrounded by piggies and it’s the cutest thing we’ve seen all day.
Located in Lakefield, Ont., The Pearly Acre Pig Haven is currently home to six incredibly smart and adorable pigs, with a seventh rescue set to move into the farm shortly.
Your rescue experience will involve meeting each pig and learning about what led them to this Pig Haven. Those pigs are Bullet, Piper, Ivy, Dexter, Cash, and Rosie, to you and me.
According to the rescue’s owner, Sarah Heydon, there’s quite a bit to learn about the residents.
“Education is always my main focus, as there's a lot of false information surrounding Pot Belly pigs including the most favourable rumour of the existence of 'Teacup pigs',” Heydon explained via email.
“For those of you who don’t realize, 'Teacup pigs' are not a thing.”
After your informative introductions, you’ll have a chance to feed and interact with the pigs.
To wrap things up, you’ll head inside with Cash for some coffee and a snack.
Heydon’s passion for these potbellied cuties started back in 2017 when she welcomed Bullet, and later Pearl, into the family.
“All except my two pigs immediately following Pearl's passing are rescued or adopted, as the need for that didn’t become truly apparent to me until afterward,” Heydon told Narcity.
“I will not pay to acquire a pig, as most often that money goes back into a cycle of irresponsible breeding. Over 90% of pigs are rehomed within the first few years of their lives due to lack of follow-up research (into) false information about pigs.”
The rescue experience, which lasts about 90 minutes, can be booked through Airbnb for up to six people at a time.
It includes a beverage of your choice (not just coffee) and a light snack.
So if you’re looking to have an encounter with an animal you wouldn’t normally have the chance to, Pearly Acre may be the spot for you.
Heydon noted she makes it a priority to create an understanding between people and "how we treat animals that are most closely associated as food."
You can rest assured her residents are well-looked-after.
In fact, you can see for yourself! You'll squeal with delight.
