13 Unique Work Outs In Halifax That Are Way Better Than The Gym

As winter approaches our outdoor workout options start to dwindle it seems. If working out in a gym environment isn’t for you, and you get bored lifting weights and bobbing on the elliptical, try a different kind of workout in Halifax and stay active this winter!
We put together a big list of activities and studios throughout the HRM that will help you get a workout in that you might even enjoy! Try something new, book a class with some friends and you’ll be having fun in no time.
1. Rock Climbing
Dalhousie students have full access to climbing programs and facilities at the Dalplex, so next time you’re bored of pumping iron, whip over to the rock walls and try something new. Seven Bays Bouldering on Gottingen is also a great indoor rock climbing facility if you’re looking to get into the sport – monthly memberships here are only $47, and there are plenty of student discounts!
2. Snow Shoeing or Cross Country Skiing
As Halifax’s beautiful trails get covered in snow and ice, beat the elements by trying snow shoeing or cross country skiing – both great ways to get outside in the winter and awesome cardio workout. Venture out to Sir Sanford Fleming Park, and Frog Pond beyond it, where you’ll find some great cross country and snow shoeing trails.
3. Downhill Skiing
Halifax has some really underrated ski hills right nearby – Wentworth Valley is only an hour and a half away! Rent some skis, try a set of lessons, and hit the slopes for a super fun winter workout. Don’t be afraid to take ample hot chocolate breaks.
If you’re looking to keep things simple go for a massive hike and take in all the beautiful winter scenery in Halifax while getting a sweet workout in! Stay downtown and stroll Point Pleasant Park, or make a day trip of it and drive out to one of Nova Scotia’s beautiful provincial parks.
There are a ton of awesome Yoga studios in Halifax with super qualified instructors that will make it really easy for you to learn and fall in the love with the practice of yoga. Try a Hot Yoga class at Shanti, or take a pilates class at Moksha downtown.
6. Dance Classes
Get your workout on the fun way by taking a dance class at one of many studios around the HRM. Try a hip-hop class at Halifax Dance, do something new at Serpentine Studios and learn how to belly dance, or meet someone new at the Halifax Salseros salsa class.
7. Circus School
Who needs to run away and join the circus when there’s one right here that’s always recruiting! Halifax Circus is a performance art troupe that offers some intense classes in acrobatics and aerial stunts, giving visitors the chance to get active in a really cool new way. Once you get the hang of it join one of their performance troupes, and put on circus acts across the city!
8. Boxing or Martial Arts
Relieve some aggression at the C.A.S.K Karate Dojo on Gottingen Street, and try one of their focused karate workouts, or take a class at 30 Minute Hit Halifax and try kickboxing or a traditional boxing fitness class.
If you’re looking to amp up your standard gym workout, try a crossfit class at CrossFit Ironstone or Crossfit Kinetics – two awesome Halifax strength training studios that will teach you the safe and healthy way to to build muscle while trying this amazing active workout.
Buy a pair of shoes with some strong grip and pick up some warm clothes before heading out for a winter jog! Join a running group in Halifax and stay active outside this winter by finding a jogging route in your area that works for your level of fitness.
If you’re worried about biking your standard summer routes during the icy winter months, try a spinning class at Cyclone Group Fitness on Barrington Street. Spin classes are a great way to get a cardio workout in, while also maintaining any summer fitness levels you’ve built up on your bike and don’t want to lose!
12. Swim Laps
Get a membership to the Centennial Public Pool, or if you’re a university student go for a lane swim at your school’s pool for a full body workout that will remind you of warmer tropical days near the ocean.
Join an intramural hockey team that plays at an arena near your area, or enjoy the public skate at Halifax’s Emera Oval, which is due to open any day now! Skating with friends is a great cardio workout and a fun way to get outside.
