It's been a tough spring so far with all this cold weather and rain. There's no need to worry though, because May's looking to be a little bit better and a little bit warmer. As warm weather approaches, more and more fun events begin to pop up. Celebrate beautiful spring weather with all these free events happening this May! 1. Join in on a symposium. Explore the relationship between still and moving imagery at this symposium. It'll be a day full of presentations by artists and curators. Admission is free with reserved tickets. Check it out May 1st at the Power Plant. Website 2. See the Graduate Exhibition at OCAD. OCAD is celebrating their 101st GradEx and it's going to be huge. There's going to be works featured by over 900 artists from the class of 2016. If you've ever been to GradEx before, you'll know the art OCAD students create is absolutely astonishing. Check it out for yourself May 4th to May 8th and join the event page. Website 3. See a Photography and Film Exhibition at Ryerson. Over 150 photography and film students will have their works featured at Maximum Exposure 2016. The exhibition is part of the CONTACT Photography Festival. Check it out May 2nd to 8th at the Image Arts building and May 13th to June 4th at the Student Learning Centre. Event Page 4. Watch a free screening of Ineffable. Dance is used as a means of storytelling instead of words in this thesis film by Ryerson students. Spend your evening watching live performances, a screening of the film Ineffable, and a panel discussion. See it May 4th at the Ryerson Sear's Atrium. Admission is PWYC (Pay What You Can). Event Page 6. Spoil your pup at Pampered Pooches T.O. Bring your pup to Liberty Village on May 7th for a fun day filled with food, fashion, health, grooming, and more. Be sure to join the event page. Website 7. Go urban exploring through Toronto photographers' eyes. Twelve Toronto photographers were given the task of presenting an image that represented their own perceptions and experiences of and in Toronto. The result was "This City: A Group Photography Show". The exhibition is open for the public at Coldstream Fine Art from May 7th to 31st. Be sure to join the event page and use the hashtag #ThisCityTO. Website 8. Shop for Mother's Day gifts. Pick up a beautiful bouquet or two for Mother's Day at the Blossom and Bloom creative flower market. Over 30 local artisans, floral designers, and craft vendors from all over the GTA will be on-site. There will also be a complimentary henna station and a large-scale sculpture flower garden. Check it out at Union Station from May 6th to 7th. Event Page 9. Bask in the sun and enjoy the cherry blossoms at High Park. You absolutely have to see the cherry blossoms for yourself – photos do it no justice. Sources say the sakura trees will probably bloom around May 7th to 8th. It's best to go as early in the morning as possible because the park gets packed pretty quickly during this time of the year. Website 10. Attend the Marijuana March. Legalization isn't too far from now. 40,000 are expected to attend the parade. Join the march May 7th at Queen's Park. Event Page 11. Watch Almost Famous at the Royal Cinema. The Royal Cinema returns with another free monthly flick. This month, it’s the Oscar-winning comedy-drama Almost Famous. Tickets are free and first come, first serve and the first 100 guests receive free popcorn. Event Page 12. Watch a video installation and hear the artist speak about it. Listen to Mexico City-based artist Melanie Smith as she talks about her video installation, "Fordlandia", on display on the 5th floor of the AGO as part of the "Many things brought from one climate to another" exhibition. White Ribbon is the world's largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women. Show your support and participate in Walk A Mile In Her Shoes by strapping on a pair of heels and walking from Yonge-Dundas Square through the heart of the Financial District. Check out a live painting performance by internationally-acclaimed JessGo (she's toured with Cirque du Soleil!) at her public open house. Celebrate Victoria Day Weekend with pups. Celebrate the best Victoria Day ever with the Ultimutts Stunt Dog Show. It's a circus style show jam-packed with amazing tricks by amazing pups. Celebrate a day of peace with a bed-in at Trinity Bellwoods Park.
