You Can See Jupiter And Saturn At Toronto's Out-Of-This-World Planet Party Next Month
You'll be star-struck!
There's a planet-gazing party in Toronto this September and it's completely free. You'll be able to see Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon. The cosmos are calling!
On Sept. 14, the University of Toronto's Dunlap Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics is putting on its second annual Planet Gazing Party.
The event is happening at the Back Campus Fields at the university from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
"There is a demand from people, particularly those who live in the city where there's a lot of light pollution, to engage with the sky," Mike Reid, public outreach coordinator for Dunlap Institute, told Narcity.
Of course, there will be telescopes for people to look through but there will also be other fun things like trivia, games with prizes, and, of course, selfie opportunities with the institute's huge moon model.
But don't worry, you don't need to brush up on your astronomy knowledge to be able to win trivia. Reid stresses that it's not a test and there's no need to study.
If you're more into learning than trivia and games, there will be at least a dozen astronomers from Dunlap Institute and the Royal Astronomical Society on-site to answer questions and give you all the information you could possibly need about astronomy.
"What we want to provide as astronomers is the enrichment of that experience by being available to answers questions that people have either about what they're seeing or about anything else in astronomy," said Reid.
"Our goal is to open the sky up to people who feel like they have interest in what's up there but maybe don't know what to look for," said Reid.
At the party last year, almost 4,000 people showed up.
"Astronomy touches on some really deep questions about the nature of what it is to be a human being," said Reid. "It's a very accessible part of nature. The sky is right there for everyone every day so anyone can access it."
If you want to see Jupiter and its moons, be sure to get there before 9 p.m. or else they won't be visible anymore. Saturn and our moon will be visible until the end of the event.
You can find more information on the party here.
