View this post on Instagram My friend asked me a few days ago why I love reading, and specifically fantasy fiction. I got home that day, & while making pancakes (which I evidentially burnt because I was lost in thought...) I thought about why it is that reading about dragons, epic battles, magical healing flowers, hobbits & on & on, brings me so much joy.... and I guess what I’ve realized is that- well first of all these books are breathtaking. . The entirely new worlds these authors can create is astounding, and the stories they weave with the words on the pages- of heartbreak, triumph, loss, victory and friendship are works of art, and truly a thing of beauty. But mostly reading fiction for me is like holding a mirror up to my own life. How I interpret stories and find meaning in them has always shown me more about the inner workings of my own mind and life. The common themes that emerge in stories give me greater understanding for the narratives that are playing out in the stories of our own lives that we all get to write. . The heroes that grace the pages of my favourite books all (for the most part) had to overcome their own obstacles, find their way, accept guidance and help from others, discover their own weaknesses, risk their hearts & learn to love- just like I do, just like we all do. And... why fantasy? Well honestly I don’t know, maybe because the magical out of this world settings just intrigue me to no end, or perhaps I just love epic battle scenes or maybe it’s just that I grew up with two brothers who also grew up on a steady diet of inhaling books, who knows. . All I really know is that I DO love reading. It’s something I lose myself in, time becomes irrelevant and anything that was troubling me melts away. It’s strange. It’s wonderful. It’s magical. And it’s like therapy for me, but cheaper 😊 I’ve said this many times before but if you like fantasy fiction please please read The Name of The Wind. I also love the Game of Throne series, Lord of the Rings, Mistborn & so many more. Let me know what ur favs are, always on the hunt for new books to read. .
