20 Things To Do In Alberta That You Have To Add To Your Spring Bucket List
Spring has sprung!
If you look outside your window today, you might think I'm a little premature in helping you plan out your spring. It's been particularly cold and nasty here in Alberta lately, but if you ask me, that's all the more reason to get planning all the fun things you'll be out doing once the wind chill disappears.
Spring is one of my favourite seasons in Alberta. We get to watch the prairies come back to life, the mountains are once again surrounded by wildlife, and the trees and gardens everywhere are back in full bloom. It makes living here that much more awesome!
If you're looking for the best way to spend your spring 2019, this list is JUST the thing for you. Check it out, and start planning out what new adventures you want to take on in this beautiful season:
Take a hike on Marsh Loop Trail
After the winter weather fades away, what better way to reacquaint yourself with nature than by taking a hike? The beautiful Marsh Loop Trail in Banff National Park is perfect for hikers of all levels! As an added bonus, you'll definitely get to experience some awesome views during your adventure.
Visit the beautiful Bow Falls
"Don't go chasing waterfalls" is probably what you've been told all your life. We like to push the envelope though, so we're encouraging you to go ahead and chase those waterfalls - more specifically, the Bow Falls! They're also located in Banff National Park, so perhaps you can even check them out after you take on the Marsh Loop Trail.
Take a ride on the Jasper SkyTram
Sure, you could take a hike to the top of a mountain to get in an awesome view. Or, you could hop aboard the Jasper SkyTram and cruise over what's known as one of Canada's most incredible National Parks. The Jasper SkyTram
Snap some photos of the stunning Red Rock Canyon
You may be thinking to yourself, "they're just rocks, what could possibly make them so special?" But believe me when I tell you that visiting Red Rock Canyon is an experience that you won't soon forget! In the springtime, when all the trees around the canyon are lush and green, the red rocks pop even more, making a picture-perfect image.
Watch the sunset at Vermillion Lakes
With the arrival of spring comes a chance for things to bloom - including love. If you've found yourself a new boo (or you just want to really wow your longtime significant other), be sure to head out to Vermillion Lakes to watch the sunset. It may not be warm enough for boating or a swim yet, but there's still enough to enjoy during your visit.
Dig for dinosaur bones at the Royal Tyrell Museum
If there's one thing that's worth bragging about in Alberta, I would honestly have to say that it may just be the Royal Tyrell Museum. We have access to explore and learn about over 130,000 different fossils, so if you have the time, I say you head on down and pick up some new fun dinosaur facts!
Take a dip in the Banff Upper Hot Springs
With the major cold chill we've been having here in Alberta over the past few weeks, I think it's safe to say some people have been avoiding the hot springs lately. It's definitely no fun to soak and end up with frozen hair and eyelashes! Ultimately, I think that spring time is the best time to soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs - it's chilly enough outside that you enjoy the hot water without boiling, but it's not so cold that you'll literally freeze!
Visit Calgary's Heritage Park Historical Village
I've lived in Calgary for a few years now, and it seems as though people always forget about the hidden gem that is Heritage Park. The spot is most popular during the winter for its seasoned festivities, but in the spring, when everything is fresh and in bloom, it makes an excellent spot for a picnic, photoshoot, or anything in between!
Check out the Canmore Cave Tours
Still not feeling the great outdoors? Why not take things under the surface with Canmore Cave Tours? How many times in your life will you get the chance to say that you explored a cave? Probably not many! Check out their website to see all the fun adventures you can go on underground in Canmore.
Get a history lesson at Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park
I grew up in Southern Alberta, so going to Banff or Jasper wasn't always ideal. One place that is pretty close to my hometown of Medicine Hat though, is Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park! It may not have the mountains, but it does have a beautiful prairie landscape - especially come springtime.
Do some shopping at West Edmonton Mall
As someone who considers themselves a shopaholic, I think you can trust me when I say that there's no better time to upgrade your wardrobe than at the change of the season! Where's the best place to do that in Alberta? West Edmonton Mall, of course! With so many stores, food vendors, a theme park, and a water park, you could spend a whole weekend here and never get bored.
Hang out with the animals at the Calgary Zoo
The Zoo has always been one of my favourite places to go. When I'm in a bad mood, hanging out amongst the cute animals never fails to cheer me up! Going to the zoo when it's -20 out isn't always ideal, but now that spring is right around the corner, you have no reason not to go!
Visit the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden
The city of Lethbridge is another often slept on place here in Alberta. If you don't like the hustle and bustle of Calgary or Edmonton, why not head out to Lethvegas for a day or two? Apart from a decent restaurant and shopping scene, they also are home to the absolutely stunning Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. These gardens are the perfect place to take a stroll, clear your mind, and get back in touch with nature.
Explore the beauty of Waterton National Park
In all my years of living in Alberta, I have yet to make it to Waterton National Park! Simply from looking at pictures though, I have to admit that it's next on my list. Here's a spot where you can get the best of both worlds - rocky mountain views and sweet prairie landscapes, all within one stunning area.
Go shopping at the St. Albert Farmer's Market
One of my personal favourite parts of spring would have to be the farmer's markets. There's no better place to get yourself some sunshine, pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables (or sweet treats, because we all know those are impossible to resist), and shop around to support your local Edmonton artists and creatives!
Get a tour of Big Rock Brewery
If you're looking for an excuse to go grab a drink, this is it. Big Rock Brewery is one of the best known breweries here in Alberta, and if you've ever wanted to know more about the hard work they put into crafting their delicious drinks, we highly recommend you grab yourself a tour (and some beer, of course).
Check out the Ghost Town of Bankhead
Halloween may still be a long ways away, but that doesn't mean you can't start the season off by getting a little spooky! The town of Bankhead is not far away from Banff National Park, and has been abandoned for decades now. Although there isn't much left, you can definitely still feel the presence of what was once in this small town.
Grab a scoop (or two) from Village Ice Cream
I consider myself a bit of an ice cream connoisseur, and if you're in Calgary and looking for a scoop, I highly suggest you pay a visit to one of Village's three locations. They have amazing flavours on their regular menu, but they also happen to have an awesome nanaimo bar season right now that is worth trying.
Hit up El Cortez for some tequila shots
Want to get rid of the last of those winter chills? Well, nothing warms you up quite like a good ole' shot of tequila! If you're in Edmonton and looking for drinks, the best spot to hit up is El Cortez. Not only do they have awesome Mexican cuisine (tacos, anyone?), but they also happen to have the best tequila selection you'll find anywhere in the city!
Try the Eat the Castle food tour at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel
How about you try living like a king for a day? At the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, you can! Every Thursday, they offer the 'Eat the Castle' food tour, where for $175, you and your can enjoy a luxurious multi-course meal, and drinks of course. It's so good you'll be tempted to come back time and time again.
