11 Day Trips Around Halifax That You Need To Take With Your BFF
For when all this snow melts.
With April just around the corner, it seems inevitable that we’ll be getting some spring weather soon and all the snow will melt (right?!). In anticipating of the quickly approaching warmth we put together a list of day trips that you and some friends have to try out.
All these spots are just an hour or two outside Halifax, within easy driving distance of the city and covered in cool trails and beaches to explore.
York Redoubt
Designated a National Historical Site in 1962, York Redoubt park overlooking the Halifax Harbour is a hidden gem that every Haligonian has to explore. Visitors hiking throughout site will have the chance to stumble upon some pretty interesting abandoned ruins and caves if they look in the right places.
Blue Mountain
Only half an hour outside of Halifax lies Blue Mountain, part of the winding trails and diverse landscape that make up the stunning Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area. This stunning region near Timberlea is a massive natural oasis just outside the city limits, and is perfect for both a short day trip to walk the dog or an ambitious hiking adventure.
Wentworth Valley
Known throughout the province as a popular ski and snowboard destination, Wentworth Valley in the Cobequid Hills of Northwestern Nova Scotia has one of the most incredible landscapes in the entire country. During the current off season, visitors can hike Wentworth’s ski slopes or hit the trails to find the Annandale Falls.
Lawrencetown Beach
Just 25 minutes away from Halifax, Lawrencetown is the perfect summer day trip for those looking to hit a world class beach. This south-facing cove is visited by travellers from all over the world and is a popular spot for surfers of all levels. The East Coast Surf School, Kannon Beach Wind & Surf, and Happy Dudes Surf Emporium are all nearby if you need gear or lessons!
Cow Bay
Only a half hour drive outside of Halifax and situated on the Eastern Shore, this rarely crowded beach is a stunning beachfront that has great winter hiking and awesome summer swimming. Whip over for a day next time the weather is nice!
McNab’s Island
Take a water taxi over to nearby McNabs Island Provincial Park, hike around the region and book a campsite for the night this summer! This spot is so close to Halifax but travelling here will make you feel like you’re in a whole different area code.
Duncan’s Cove
This nature reserve near Chebucto Head is one of the best coastal hikes near Halifax, with breathtaking panoramic views and rolling granite cliffs. Whales, seals and other cool wild life have been spotted in the area, so bring your camera next time you visit!
Peggy’s Cove
Though Peggy’s Cove is a super popular tourist destination it’s definitely worth a day trip with friends or family who are visiting from out of town. Take in the incredible views from the cove, snap a pic with the famous lighthouse and grab some delicious lobster at Sou’Wester!
Lunenburg
Part of the county bearing its name, Lunenburg is located on the Fairhaven Peninsula, at the western side of Mahone Bay. The perfect spot for a spring day trip, this historic town was founded only a few years after Halifax, and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its preservation of local culture. Only an hour and fifteen minutes away, bring a visiting friend and show them an awesome time!
Long Lake
Head up to North West Arm Drive and spend the day hiking through Long Lake Provincial Park. Take in all the incredible fall scenery that surrounds this Halifax lake! This is also a great spot to swim and explore in the summer months and is super close to downtown Halifax.
K.C Irving Botanical Gardens
Located on Acadia campus in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, it only takes an hour long drive to visit this unique indoor botanical garden. The gardens are just one small part of a local 1.5 km hiking route that you have to try.
