With so much going on in Halifax it’s difficult to tear yourself away.  There are constantly live bands to see and art shows to attend.  Although it’s tempting after a long work week to hang out in the city and relax, there’s nothing better than a road trip with friends!

Fall is the most beautiful time to travel Nova Scotia, and there are so many towns throughout the province with incredible natural wonders nearby that you must explore.  Here are 17 places you have to stop in on your next epic autumn getaway.

1. Truro

Take the scenic one hour drive out to Truro this weekend and take in all the town has to offer!  Visit their charming Farmer’s Market, or walk some of the beautiful local trails and catch a glimpse of the changing fall leaves.

2. Windsor

Located in Hants county, Windsor has a rich Mi’kmaq History dating back hundreds of years.  Visit this fall to try some geo-caching in the area, or take part in the town’s Halloween Hunt for the Golden Gourd on October 29th.  Costumes are encouraged!!

3. Bridgewater

Drive down to Lunenburg County and visit Bridgewater this fall for a golfing trip at one of the multiple golf clubs in the region.  If you’re more of a nautical person there are lots of kayaking and sailing tours to be had along the Atlantic coast – visit the town’s brand new visitors center at 125 Cornwall Road for all the details on how to make your trip a blast.

4. Kentville

Known as “The Winter Playground of the Valley,” be sure to visit Kentville this season and partake in their spooky Infirmary of Lost Souls haunted post office tour, running every weekend of October for only $10 per person, or $25 for the whole family!

5. Greenwood

Another stop you have to make on your fall getaway through the valley is the town of Greenwood!  The village grew quickly during World War II when military personnel established the RAF Station Greenwood, and today can stop in at the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum to learn about the ways the town has formed around its military roots.  Hike out and visit nearby Crystal Falls if you're looking for an outdoor activity!

6. Port Hawkesbury

Take a trip to the end of Cape Breton Island to visit Port Hawkesbury, and take in all the gorgeous fall scenery in this region.  A great stop for hiking enthusiasts, explore the nearby Strait of Canso, or try the 10km Port Hawkesbury Trail System.

7. Berwick

Get away to Kings County this weekend, and stop by the town of Berwick for their Saturday morning Flea Market being held at the Community Centre.  The Margie Brown duo will also be performing at the Oaken Barrel Pub that night, so be sure to check them out!

8. Baddeck

Those hoping to hike the famous Cabot Trail will be driving out to Baddeck to start their journey!  This Cape Breton town marks the start and finish of the legendary trail – while you’re in the area visit the Highland Village Museaum, or the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site!

9. Stellarton

South of New Glasgow you’ll find the STELLAR town of STELLARton (sorry I’m sure everyone makes that joke).  Visit their Nova Scotia Museum Of Industry, or hike along the nearby East River of Pictou.

10. Sydney

You must stop in this Cape Breton hub if you’re driving through the region – one of the largest towns in Nova Scotia, Sydney is home to the Cape Breton Centre for Heritage & Science and the Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design.  Visit Open Hearth or Wentworth Park for some beautiful fall scenery!

11. Pictou

Located in a county of the same name, visitors of Pictou should be sure to check out the deCoste Entertainment Centre and the Northumberland Fisheries Museum and Lobster Hatchery this fall. There are also plenty of walking trails, hiking excursions and guided kayaking tours to enjoy in the area!

12. West Hants

One of the municipal districts of Hants County, West Hants is home to the Minas Basin where the worlds highest tides rise up to 16 meters – a site you must see on your next fall adventure!  The effect of these tides along the Rising Tide Shore has created some massive cliffs, and the red sandstone and volcanic rock have been worn away to reveal fossils from over 300 million years ago.

13. East Hants

For those hoping to visit the incredible Bay of Fundy this fall you must stop in East Hants along the way.   This portion of Hants County has some unbelievable landscapes, similar in magnitude to those that might be found around its western counterpart.

14. New Minas

Another important place to visit in the Valley this fall is the town of New Minas – located right between Kentville and Wolfville.  Known as the “Shopping Centre of the Valley,” New Minas has a variety of shops and restaurants that you have to see in addition to their detailed local trail system.

15. Argyle

Drive through Yarmouth county on your next fall getaway and stop in the Municipality of the District of Argyle to take in the region’s local fishing communities and beautiful coastline.  Visit the Argyle farmers’ market, walk throughout the town and take in its rich history or visit the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere reserve.

16. Ingonish

For those hiking along the Cabot Trail be sure to stop at Ingonish for a visit!  This Cape Breton town is composed of five small communities along the trail nestled between the Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Atlantic Ocean.  The regions natural beauty will be in full effect for the fall months, so make sure you check it out!

17. Pugwash

Perched on the Northumberland Strait in Cumberland County, this beautiful fishing village is the perfect place to stop and explore on your way to Wentworth for a ski trip.  Hike along the local rivers and visit wild life habitat reserves in the region for hunting and bird watching.
