Saranac Lake is town in New York that holds a magnificent winter carnival every year that includes fun activities such as snow sports, performances, parades, fireworks and a self-guided ice castle tour. It is approximately 5 and a half hours away from Toronto by car, which makes it a great destination for a weekend trip this winter.

The tradition to build an ice castle started all the way back in 1898; one year after Saranac Lake held its first winter carnival. The palace is designed and built by a team of individuals with engineering experience, and up to 4,000 2-by-4-foot long ice blocks are used. Inside the castle are also various ice sculptures that visitors can view and take pictures with them.

Every year, the building of the ice castle is dependent on the weather conditions. In most years, winters are cold enough to keep the ice castle up and running throughout the entire festival, while other years it had to be torn down because conditions were not favourable for it to remain standing.

Please stay tuned for more updates on the ice castle nearer to the 2017 event! The Winter Carnival opens next year on February 3, 2017 and will be available until the 12th. For more information, visit Saranac Lake's Winter Carnival website here.
