The Rockies will always keep you coming back time and again. Hidden gems like this are exactly why. This lakeside spot by overlooking Rundle Mountain offers the most dazzling views of the Alberta skies. Whether you’re a habitual sky-watcher or you just like chilling in gorgeous spots, the docks on Vermilion Lakes might be your new favourite place.

The Vermilion Lakes are situated in the Bow Valley region within the Banff National Park and just 2.4 kilometres from the town of Banff. You could easily cover that distance on a bike, in a car, or on foot if you're feeling ambitious.

Since the lakes have such a calm, natural vibe, you might as well settle down on the shore for a little bit and gaze up at the skies.

If you're someone who loves to take in a breathtaking sunrise with your morning coffee, you won't find a better spot. If you're more of a late-night person, the sunsets and stargazing opportunities are pretty phenomenal, too.

Just imagine the vibrant colours being reflected off the clear water below.

You might even be able to catch the northern lights if you head out there during the winter. If you need some added incentive, you can skate on the frozen lakes in the wintertime.

The frozen bubbles that get trapped underneath the ice are a sight to behold on their own.

During the summer, the lakes offer an entirely different set of activities, so there is something for everyone. Whether you're into stand up paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking, there are so many different ways to spend an afternoon in this natural playground.

If you want to feast your eyes on more spectacular views of Rundle, you can opt for a short hike that goes through the marshes near the lakes.

The trail is only 2 kilometres long and it will take you through the lush green forests nearby.

If you just prefer hanging out on the docks, splashing your feet in cool water, and breathing that crisp mountain air, that's totally fine, too.

If you've been meaning to plan a few road trips in Alberta this spring, Vermilion Lakes should be the first item on your bucket list.
