Drive-in theatres might seem like a blast from the past, but lately, they're making a serious comeback. It's the perfect social distancing activity to get out of the house for a few hours without having to leave your car. The oldest movie theater in Georgia, Plaza Theatre, has transformed into its own drive-in to satisfy that movie-goin' itch while indoor establishments are closed.

Atlanta's Plaza Theatre has been operating since 1939. Located right on Ponce Ave, the huge retro-inspired neon sign out front is hard to miss when driving down the road.

While the Plaza hasn't been able to open their indoor sit-down areas for showings due to COVID-19 and the shelter-in-place guidelines for venues, owner Christopher Escobar has gotten creative to let the show go on.

This movie theatre turned drive-in has transformed its parking lot into a spot to watch some of your favorite films. Pick a parking space and catch a flick on a huge projector screen backdropped by trees and the Atlanta skyline.

You can now head to The Plaza to see some classics all from the comfort of your car. The weekend of May 15 was a trial run, and tickets sold out within a few mere hours.

The kickoff weekend included showings of Clue, based on the beloved board game, and Jim Henson's cult classic The Dark Crystal.

Memorial Day weekend movie tickets will go on sale today Monday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. β€” and if it's anything like last weekend's showings, these tickets will go fast. Don't forget the popcorn!

Movies that'll be playing this upcoming weekend include Jaws, Mars Attacks!, The Princess Bride, and Groundhog Day. You can check in on various showings and times on The Plaza's Facebook and Instagram pages.

Prices start at $15 for a one-person car and $28 for a two-person car.

While everything is up in the air about when certain businesses will reopen, there's no specific timeline for how long this new normal for the movie theatre will last.

If you can't make it to a drive-in showing, the theatre is also offering the ability to stream a variety of movies from home. Customers can purchase an online ticket and have streaming access to select films for five days.
