As Arizona continues to see a rise in COVID-19 cases, the state is taking action to prevent the spread. Tucson's face mask mandate will require everyone over the age of two to wear a face-covering in public. If you refuse, you could be in for a civil penalty.

On June 18, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero mandated that everyone within the city is required to wear a face-covering.

In a tweet, she wrote, "I am asking all Tucsonans to do their part and please wear a mask - not just for your own health, but for the health of your family, friends, and neighbors. #MaskUpAZ"

This new requirement means that everyone in the city over the age of two will have to cover their nose and mouth with coverings starting Saturday, June 20, at 6 a.m.

There are many different options available if you're unable to get a cloth face mask. Bandanas and scarfs can be used in place of them.

On the detailed City Face Covering Requirement FAQ page, it says that face masks may prevent the person wearing them from spreading "respiratory droplets when talking, sneezing, or coughing."

There are some exceptions to wearing a covering in public spaces. The FAQ page states that people exercising outside, swimming, or walking while practicing social distancing do not have to wear one.

However, you must wear a cover over your nose and mouth when you are unable to maintain a six-foot distance from others; this includes when at a grocery store, a pharmacy, a doctor's appointment, and when riding public transportation.

In some instances, this new requirement will be enforced. At first, it "will focus first on educating and working to promote the mitigation of the spread of COVID-19."

You can receive a citation if you "demonstrate an intentional disregard for and refusal to comply with the requirements."

This means you're in for a civil penalty of up to $50 or five hours of community service.
