It Was Probably A Good Idea That Miami Heat Signed Jimmy Butler
Jimmy Butler is fluent in 'Culture' and so is the Miami Heat
Jimmy Butler was formally introduced as the Miami Heat's newest signing in early July. The move has been widely regarded as a great deal for the Miami Heat franchise. And while the former Philadelphia 76er player had other options, we'd like to think the move was great for Butler as well.
Upon setting ink to paper on his new four-year deal, Butler told the Miami Herald, “I think the culture that this organization is about, obviously the players that they have, the players they have had in the past, it fits who I am, what I’m about, how I think, how I go about what I go about every day."
It's actually quite fitting that Butler used the word 'culture' in that quote. In the Miami Heat lexicon, Culture is a huge word. It is used to describe that certain 'je ne sais quoi' that the Heat franchise has been known for. It defies the Miami Heat swagger, determination to win and competitiveness.
Being competitive is one thing Jimmy Butler knows about. Don't forget: this is the guy who while at Minnesota defeated the entire starting lineup during a practice scrimmage with the help of bench players so that he could drive home his point that the team needed him and certainly not vice versa.
Needless to say, this made huge waves in the NBA world and solidified Butler's fame of being one of the most competitive guys in the league.
When a player gets signed to a new team in the NBA, certainly the most important aspect is to determine whether said player is a good match for the team. But it's also crucial to note whether he is a good fit for the city he will no be calling his home. Now, we know there are tougher cities to fall in love with than Miami but Butler seems to have some Miami in his bones already.
Before last season ended, the then Philadelphia 76er decide to take a tour of Calle Ocho while he was in town to play the Miami Heat.
Thanks to the help of Marvin Tapia, a Little Havana community representative, Butler, per his request, got to test his dominoes skills against some seasoned veterans in Dominoe Park. Boy oh boy did Butler look the part that day. Guayabera with a cigar in the left chest pocket, accompanied by a pair of white pants and a fedora to top it all off? Bravo, sir. Bravo.
There is one more reason to feel optimistic about this new addition to the Heat. Jimmy Butler played his College Basketball at Marquette University. That's the same school Dwayne Wade attended.
Let's not forget that Wade and Butler also spent some time in the same locker room during Wade's breif stint as a Chicago Bull. Surely, Butler must have picked up a thing or two from the Heat great.
The Miami Heat is set to make its Home game Preseason debut against the San Antonio Spurs on October 8th in the American Airlines Arena. This should be the first time Heat fans get to see the new Miami star in action.
