If you have a hunger for adventure, there are many local spots that are great for finding new, exciting experiences right in your own state. This one hike in the Virginia mountains will make you take a step back from reality and into scenic trails with wild ponies. So prepare your hiking boots because you won't want to skip this!

Grayson Highlands State Park is located in Grayson County, Virginia. It's near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, which are the state's highest mountains.

This park is actually the best way to get to Mount Rogers for visitors who are backpacking the Appalachian Trail.

There are 13 hiking trails throughout this park and they can vary from half a mile to over 2 miles each.

Visitors will see scenic waterfalls, incredible vistas and might even get a history lesson at the 200-year-old pioneer cabin they’ll come across.

This location is also known for its bouldering opportunities. According to the official website, Grayson Highlands is the best bouldering site in the entire state.

Bouldering is like rock climbing and there are rocks of all skill levels so no one will be left out of this unique experience.

Aside from the exhilarating boulder climbing and AT hiking, taking a scenic walk is necessary if you want to see the wild ponies.

These ponies were brought to the park to prevent reforestation of the Highland balds in 1974, according to DCR Virginia.

The Wilburn Ridge Pony Association is the group that looks after these wild little guys, checking for any health issues they might have.

For those that want even more time with the adorable animals, visitors have the opportunity to camp in the stable area with them. This is the only camping area where horses are allowed.

When exploring the wild pony scenic trails, it’s good to know that horses bite and kick when they feel threatened so it’s best to approach with caution.

Getting out and exploring the outdoors might lead to discovering hidden gems you never knew existed.
