Many Texans are familiar with the joke that you could drive for hours within the state and still not come close to leaving its borders. While this can be true, when you do come close to crossing Texas borders, you'd be surprised by how much beauty you're able to find right at the edge. This national forest near Houston will help you realize just how incredible nature truly is.

Sabine National Forest is 160,656 acres of serenity and one of only four national forests in all of Texas.

It's also the forest furthest east and forms part of the boundary between Texas and Louisiana. The more you know, right?

Fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, and more can be done in a day here, which is probably why spending the night is so popular. There's just so much to do!

If you happen to stop by during the spring or fall, the forest is filled with blossoms and colorful leaves. Not something you can find just anywhere in the Lone Star State, that's for sure.

There are miles worth of trails to go hiking on and you'll likely wind up with an incredible view right in front of you when you explore them.

The wildlife you'll spot is unbeatable, which is probably why it's so popular for fishing and hunting.

In fact, there are 296,100 acres of prime sportfishing provided by the nearby Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn Reservoirs.

Texans and Louisianans alike can come out and spot creatures they couldn't find anywhere else.

Sabine National Forest's main office is open Monday through Wednesday and you can reach them at (409) 625-1940.

For those planning on traveling around Texas or Louisiana this summer, you can't go wrong with a trip here.
