Exploring the great outdoors in Virginia is on many people's list of things to do when they visit. The tricky part about this is that there are so many cool places to explore that it might be hard to narrow down which spots to hit. This trail in Virginia might need to be on the list of places you should visit because of its one-of-a-kind features.

The Brumley Mountain Trail in southwest Virginia is approximately 6.6 miles round trip. This hike is rated as difficult because you'll be gaining an elevation of 1,219 feet throughout your journey.

The trail takes you up Brumley Mountain and through many geological formations.

This formation is called the Great Channels. They formed about 400 million years ago and it might be hard to believe that these aren't man-made structures

As you begin to hike on this trail, you'll notice that the entire hike is pretty shaded - you won't be sweating buckets because the canopied trees will be covering you from the sun.

You'll pass a few abandoned cabins and shelters that make great resting points (and fun pics).

Hikers will soon find themselves walking down into the channels and it's time to make your way through the maze.

The sandstone structures have multiple crevices and pockets that you must guide yourself through.

Geologists think that the formations appeared due to "permafrost and ice wedging, which split large seams in the soft sandstone," according to Roots Rated.

On your way back from the Channels to the trailhead, you can stop off at a few boulders off the trail and take in a view of the surrounding Virginia mountains.
