Virginia is one of the few states that kept most of its beaches and state parks open this past month with social distancing rules in effect. This includes the longest recreational bridge in Virginia, which is quite a sight to see. Visitors won't have to worry about interacting with other guests as this bridge runs 2,400 feet long. The High Bridge near Farmville, Virginia, is 31 miles long and is used by hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders. It stands 125 feet above the Appomattox River and is the longest recreational bridge in the state and one of the longest in the nation. The bridge and trail are located in High Bridge State Park and was originally used as a railway over 200 years ago. Back in 2004, the railway was turned into this activity bridge. It's also considered a Virginia Historic Landmark. According to Visit Farmville, this bridge is the very spot where two Civil War Battles took place during Robert E. Lee's Retreat and he actually surrendered right at Appomattox. We recommend visiting next month during the their annual Firefly Festival (June 15-16). Guests are invited to gather on the bridge after dark to witness thousands of fireflies lighting up the forest below. ✨ 📷: @laferriere.photography #LoveVA #VAOutdoors #railstotrails @vastateparks A post shared by Virginia is for Lovers (@visitvirginia) on May 14, 2018 at 7:02am PDT There are many ways to get to the High Bridge. For those that want a semi-quick adventure, parking at the River Road parking lot is going to be the best option. From here, visitors will only have to hike a mile to the bridge. The entire trip will come to about two miles, which is just enough for a mini-adventure. It's not a shaded or wooded forest hike, so hikers should try to start their adventure earlier in the morning before it gets too hot to handle. There are different overlooks on the bridge, so hikers can view the river below and see how high they actually are. There'll be scenic views from every inch of the bridge as well.
