Being on a deserted island away from reality seems like an idea that is very far-fetched. Right here in Georgia, there is actually an island that has no cars, no residential homes, and the only population is the horses and those who visit. You can visit this secluded island in Georgia that has wild horses and mansion ruins.

Dungeness Ruins is located on Cumberland Island. The only way to get to this island is the ferry that runs back and forth from the neighboring Saint Mary's Island. What is even cooler, there are wild horses that roam here.

There are many trails throughout the island that will lead you through beautiful forests and to unique landmarks. One of the best things to see here is the ruins. You will eventually run into this huge mansion that looks like something right out of an old-time king and queen novel.

This property used to be owned by the Carnegie family in the 1800s. This family owned most of this island and resided in this Scottish-style building. It had 59 rooms and you can still see some spaces where the windows used to be.

It has been abandoned and burnt down, and what remains is the ruins. You can walk the grounds and take as many pictures as you desire. The actual entries to the house are blocked off, but you can see everything on the inside from the outer grounds of the property.

What remained on this property is part of the mansion, the pool house, the gardens and a few other smaller buildings. If you are lucky, you might just see a few horses wandering through these buildings.

You will be able to get a feel of the lavish lifestyle of the 1800s, like a Gone With The Wind vibe. Once you step up to the ruins and you are met face to face with it, you will feel like you have been transported back in time.

Cumberland Island has more than just the ruins to explore. If you want to explore the island over a few days, there are some camping spots you can reserve so you never have to leave the island.
