Fans of the Anne of Green Gables adaptation Anne With An E were heartbroken when they found out that the show was being cancelled by CBC and Netflix, who co-produced the series. Before Anne With An E was cancelled, it ran for three seasons. It was based on the classic book Anne Of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
Anne With An E first premiered in March 2017 and starred Amybeth McNulty as the famous fictional resident of Prince Edward Island. The show was created by Moira Walley-Beckett, who also served as showrunner.
Walley-Beckett shared her own message about the show's cancellation on her Instagram page.
"We have reached the end of the red Green Gables road after 3 wonderful seasons," Walley-Beckett wrote, "My heart is heavy but I am so proud of this show - proud of my talented cast, crew, writers, and directors for working together so passionately to bring my vision of #annewithane to life."
Anne With An E's cancellation has left some fans feeling heartbroken, but they haven't given up hope.
After the announcement of the show being cancelled, fans created the hashtag, #renewannewithane.
"Awae is one of the best if not the best tv show I have ever watched, the storyline, the writing, the message it passes and so much more every single detail of that show is perfect, exquisite, extraordinary and we can't lose it now, that can't be the end! #renewannewithane" reads one tweet.
"I am soooo tired @cbc I beg you #renewannewithane please please please please #renewannewithane" reads another.
Many of the tweets were accompanied by an image or gif from the series to emphasize fan's desire for the show to be renewed.
Since the outcry on Twitter, Walley-Beckett has said that she would love to finish the story of Anne With An E off with a movie.
"I will miss this show forever and a day. That being said, I’d love to write an AWAE finale feature film," Walley-Beckett said in a statement to ET Canada.
CBC had previously hinted that it would end its relationship with Netflix.
Fans may have to wait until the New Year to catch up on the final season of Anne With An E, but Netflix will have plenty of great streaming options over Christmas.
