There are few shows in the world that will make you feel the way Atypical on Netflix Canada does. The original series has already released three seasons, and earlier today, it was announced that the show has been renewed for a fourth and final season.
When we last saw the show's main character, Sam (played by Canadian actor Kier Gilchrist), in season three, he was headed off to college in hopes of finding the independence he's always searched for. If you haven't yet seen Atypical, Sam is on the autism spectrum, and for much of his life, he's relied on his family to help him navigate difficult situations.
The end of season three definitely left the audience with some cliffhangers, so it's a relief to know that we'll be getting answers to the questions we've been left to ponder.
On Monday, February 24, the official Atypical Instagram account released a video compiled of clips from past episodes, announcing that the series had been renewed for a fourth season, although it will also be the show's last.
"They've brought you laughs, tears, hugs, and homies," the video says. "Join Sam on one last expedition. Atypical returns for a fourth and final season. 🐧"
The hit series was created, written, and executive produced by Robia Rashid, who told Variety that she's incredibly excited for the opportunity to work on another season of Atypical.
“Our fans have been such beautiful, vibrant supporters of this show. Thank you for being so open to Sam’s voice and stories, and those of the entire Gardner family. It’s my hope that the legacy of Atypical is that more unheard voices continue to be heard and that even after this series ends, we keep telling funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view.”
An exact release date for the upcoming season has yet to be shared, although TV Line reports that viewers can expect to see it on Netflix sometime in 2021.
While you're waiting, be sure to check out the show's hilarious and heartwarming first three seasons on the streaming service.
