You sit down every week to pop on a new episode of your favourite show, but have you ever stopped to wonder where the production takes place? For many TV series, Hollywood is a hotspot and go-to place to film, but Canada is ramping up in popularity and a lot of content takes place here. That includes The Good Doctor filming locations that are in BC and it's in production right now.
The ABC series first premiered in 2017 and is actually based on a show from South Korea with the same name.
It stars Freddie Highmore who you know from magical movies including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and The Golden Compass. He took on the role of a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who escapes his troubled childhood to start a medical career in California.
The 27-year-old stars opposite Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Chuku Modu, and Beau Garrett.
According to IMDB, the San Francisco Bay Area and San Jose are used for establishing shots to show the viewer where the show is set. Though it's set in San Jose, the bulk of filming takes place in popular cities on the west coast.
The Cinemaholic indicates that BC is a popular location because of "its relative proximity to the United States and generous tax credits offered by the Canadian government have been cited as the primary reasons for producers to opt shooting movies and television series there."
The first filming place IMDb lists is Vancouver which also includes Vancouver Community College Broadway Campus.
In a tweet from August 2019, a user shared photos they snapped of the college that includes ambulances and even one of Freddie Highmore and Richard Schiff.
They also film in Surrey and IMDb notes that Surrey City Hall is used to fill in as San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital, where Highmore's character Dr. Shaun Murphy is completing his surgical residency.
Another Twitter user posted photos of Surrey Civic Plaza where production was taking place in August 2018.
Also listed on IMDb are Burnaby and they note that includes the "ICU & residences" as well as Coquitlam used for the "Hospital rooms & Boardroom".
The Cinemaholic wrote that "the board room of the hospital, as shown in the pilot episode of The Good Doctor is actually filmed at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver." Other locations they include that have been used in single episodes are "BC Place Stadium, Boundary Bay Regional Airport in Delta, Cleveland Avenue in Squamish, Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, and East Lawn Building in Coquitlam."
According to What's Filming, production on season three began in June 2019 and will go until March 3.
