The medical drama first premiered in 2017 and can be likened to its fellow ABC series, Grey's Anatomy. Currently in its third season, the show has taken viewers on a series of emotional ups and downs at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. There's good news for big fans because The Good Doctor season four is happening and will likely be filmed in Vancouver again.
Deadline confirmed the renewal earlier today and called it the "first ABC scripted series renewal this season." Deadline also noted that both The Good Doctor and Grey's Anatomy are ABC's "two most-watched series" this year.
According to What's Filming, season three of the show is still under production in Vancouver and will go until March 3. What's Filming hasn't confirmed when season four filming will begin, or if it will again take place in the BC area.
Though fictionally located in San Jose, California, the first three seasons of the drama were filmed in Vancouver according to IMDb. That includes specific hotspots like Vancouver Community College Broadway Campus, Surrey City Hall, Burnaby, and Coquitlam.
Surrey City Hall stands in for the hospital where lead character Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) is completing his surgical residency. Murphy has autism and savant syndrome, which gives him the advantage of a photographic memory and specific attention to tiny changes and details.
Highmore stars opposite Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, and Christina Chang, who all play talented doctors at the hospital.
The series has an 8.2/10 rating on IMDb that came from over 51,000 reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 84% average audience score where the most recent season received 76%, and the first two seasons both received 88% from the audience.
You can catch the third season of The Good Doctor every Monday at 10 p.m. on CTV. Check out the trailer for the newest season below.
