As much as people like to complain about Netflix and their notorious price hikes, for what you pay, you really do get your money's worth. The streaming service is almost always rolling out some sort of new series for its viewers to enjoy, whether it's a comedy, drama, or true crime. With so many options to choose from, you may be wondering, what are the best Netflix original shows?

In 2019 alone, the streaming service has released more shows than you can count on two hands, some of which were total flops and definitely won't be getting a second season, and others, of course, that fans are literally begging Netflix to speed up production on so that they can find out what happens to their favourite characters next.

Almost all of the work that comes with watching Netflix is from the endless scrolling and trying to decide exactly what it is that you want to watch, so we've eliminated that part for you and have left you with a simple list of some of 2019's highest-rated Netflix original series.

We've got everything from shocking true crime to hilarious and awkward coming-of-age stories, so check out the trailers below and see where you want to start.

Unbelievable

Rating: 97% on Rotten Tomatoes

While it may not exactly be a docuseries, Unbelievable tells an important and very true story about victims of sexual assault. Parts of the show are definitely hard to stomach, but it's been called "one of the best shows of 2019", so it's worth a watch.

When They See Us

Rating: 96% on Rotten Tomatoes

When They See Us is also based on a true story — this one, about five young black men who were wrongly convicted of crimes that they didn't commit. This intense drama has some of the best casting of any Netflix original and is sure to open your eyes to an entirely different world.

Sex Education

Rating: 90% on Rotten Tomatoes

If you're in need of some comic relief Sex Education is the perfect show to give you just that. The teen comedy follows a  group of awkward high school students as they embark on a journey of understanding their sexuality and basically just trying to survive.

Russian Doll

Rating: 97% on Rotten Tomatoes

Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne from Orange Is The New Black, which on its own is pretty much enough reason to watch it. If you need more motivation though, the show scored 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, mostly because of how hilarious it is.

The Devil Next Door

Rating: 91% on Rotten Tomatoes

You may think you know your neighbour, but do you really? The Devil Next Door is a harrowing tale of a seemingly innocent old man who's world is turned upside down when he's accused of actually being a notorious WWII criminal.

Our Planet

Rating: 93% on Rotten Tomatoes

Nature documentaries and chill, anyone? Our Planet is pretty much one of the most beautiful and calming things that you can watch on Netflix (apart from a few scenes that were deemed very triggering by viewers). Next time you're in the mood to relax, be sure to check out an episode or two.
