Netflix’s New Documentary Takes Viewers On The Heartbreaking Journey Of Cyntoia Brown
Any true crime lovers out there?
You won’t believe this story! The latest film to take the internet by storm is Cyntoia Brown’s Netflix documentary, which viewers were just given a first look at. There are still a few weeks before the film’s planned release, but people are already blown away by the incredible true crime story.
Back in 2017, you may have seen the hashtag #FreeCyntoiaBrown trending across various social media platforms. According to Rolling Stone, Rihanna was the first celebrity to spread the word about the young woman who had been incarcerated.
Rolling Stone reports that in 2006, Brown was convicted of killing 43-year-old Johnny Allen, a real estate agent who had solicited her at a Nashville Sonic restaurant in 2004. At the time, Brown was just 16 years old.
During the trial, the then-18-year-old testified that she shot Allen in self-defence and that she truly believed that he was going to kill her. Brown also testified that she had been forced into sex work by a pimp named Kutthroat, who she claimed was physically and emotionally abusive.
Despite her testimony, prosecutors came to the conclusion Brown had planned to rob Allen, and that his murder was pre-meditated. Although she was underage when the shooting occurred, Brown was still tried as an adult and consequently sentenced to life behind bars.
Brown’s heartbreaking story garnered a lot of attention from celebrities like Kim Kardashian West and Lana Del Rey, both of whom used their platforms to advocate for the young woman's freedom.
“When I was 16, I did a horrible thing. I do pray that you show me mercy and that you give me a second chance,” Brown can be heard saying in the preview of the documentary.
