Whether you've been a Grey's Anatomy fan since season 1 episode 1 or you have only seen a few episodes here and there, you have to admit it's a pretty iconic show. It's currently in its 16th season, and it shows no signs of stopping. While the cast has changed a ton, the most developed characters have stayed around. Grey's Anatomy is filmed in Los Angeles but is set in Seattle. The show really has no Canadian connection, except three pivotal characters on Grey's Anatomy are played by Canadians.
Can you guess who these Canadian actors are? Some of them may steal your hearts, and some may make you mad at times. However, they're known to be fan favourites. Unfortunately, one actress has left the show and it was probably one of the worst times on Grey's Anatomy.
Caterina Scorsone, who plays the hard-headed but thoughtful character Dr. Amelia Shepherd, is a Canadian actress who was born in Toronto. Giacomo Gianniotti, who plays Dr. Andrew DeLuca, is also from Toronto but was born in Rome, Italy. And of course, we can't forget about Sandra Oh. Sandra Oh, who played Dr. Cristina Yang up until season 10, is from Ottawa.
Caterina Scorsone has played Amelia Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy since season 7 when she was a guest star as Derek Shepherd's sister. Her character has evolved so much from then, and she is now a main character with a pretty heavy storyline. Scorsone went to U of T and got married in Toronto as well.
Fans absolutely love her character, even though her storyline can be a little hard to grasp at times. One Twitter user called her the "best character on Grey's Anatomy" while another agreed, and said, "you can't change my mind bc it's just a fact".
Just like Scorsone, Giacomo Gianniotti grew up in Toronto but he was born in Rome, Italy. Before his role on Grey's Anatomy, he actually starred in an Italian medical drama called Medicina Generale. While he lives in LA while shooting, he comes back to Toronto very often. He even does appearances in Toronto, and fans line up around the block for him!
While his *spoiler alert* relationship with Meredith Grey may be controversial for some fans, so many fans love Dr. Andrew DeLuca that he was promoted to a main character. One Twitter user wrote that she would "die for Andrew DeLuca" while another one said they would "be nothing without Meredith Grey and Andrew DeLuca."
Last but certainly not least is Sandra Oh, who played Dr. Cristina Yang from season 1-10. Fans absolutely loved her character, so much so that they think every hint in Grey's Anatomy is about her returning. Her return may never happen and her Canadian roots will never end. Oh recently starred in an Air Canada commercial that is genius and filled with so many Canadian stereotypes.
Fans of the show still see Oh as one of the best characters in Grey's Anatomy and on TV in general. One Twitter user wrote that Cristina Yang makes her think "...about how far you'll go to stay true to yourself" while another simply wrote, "Cristina Yang was the best character on Grey's anatomy, and that’s on that".
Unfortunately, those are all the Canadian actors on Grey's Anatomy. However, don't worry. Grey's Anatomy still has another season after season 16, but it may not even end there! If it were up to all of us, the show would never end.
