Just like with any holiday, there are a few cult classic Halloween movies that people love to watch every October. Films like Halloweentown, The Addams Family, or even Paranormal Activity, if you're into really scary things. Another movie to add to the list is the 1993 classic, Hocus Pocus, which is about three sister witches, who are accidentally resurrected on Halloween night by three teenagers in the city of Salem. The original movie has become a part of many people's Halloween traditions, but it looks like that may change soon. Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+ is coming sooner than you'd think.
It was announced just last night that by Variety that after over two decades of waiting, a sequel to the original Hocus Pocus movie is in works for the new streaming service, Disney+. The film does not yet have a director, but the script is being written by Jen D'Angelo, who co-produced the hilarious show, Workaholics.
In the original film, the three evil witches were played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy. Unfortunately, none of the trio has signed on for the sequel yet, but that couldn't definitely change as they're still in the very early stages of developing the movie.
Ironically enough, when Hocus Pocus first came out, it was actually considered a box office flop. The movie's budget was $28 million, and it made just $39 million worldwide. In the years after though, the movie became wildly successful, and now a lot of people feel as though they're not really celebrating Halloween if they haven't watched it.
This isn't the first sequel/reboot to be announced by Disney+ ahead of its upcoming launch this November. The new streaming service is in intense competition with Netflix, and in order to win over the hearts of audiences, it looks as though they're really using nostalgia, bringing back your favourite movies and TV shows from your childhood.
Shows like Lizzie McGuire and The Proud Family will be available on Disney+ over the next few months, along with many others. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we'll also have a new Hocus Pocus movie before next Halloween!
