Although I think most of us hope that we're never involved in serious crime for as long as we live, there's still something that's so enticing about living out other people's stories via true crime shows and movies. The genre has risen in popularity over recent years, especially on Netflix. Here are some true crime shows on Netflix Canada if you're totally obsessed.

With everything from people being tricked into giving false confessions to a pizza delivery man being forced to rob a bank while wearing a collar bomb, there's an endless supply of true crime on Netflix for your enjoyment.

The Staircase

Why you need to watch it: Of all the true crime docu-series available on Netflix, The Staircase is perhaps one of the best. The 13 episode series tells the story of American novelist, Michael Peterson who was accused of murdering his wife after she fell down their staircase in 2001.

The Investigator

Why you need to watch it: The Investigator tells the story of a wife and mother who mysteriously disappeared in 1985. Despite a body never having been found, her husband wound up in jail with a life sentence for her murder.

The Confession Tapes

Rating: 7.5/10 on IMDb

Why you need to watch it: When cases don't come up with sufficient evidence to prove a suspect guilty, law enforcement is sometimes forced to head to the interrogation room. In some cases throughout history, police have used devious tactics to get false confessions out of suspects - The Confession Tapes tells a few of these stories.

Evil Genius

Rating: 7.6/10 on IMDb

Why you need to watch it: It's been over a year since I watched Evil Genius for the first time, and I still can't fully wrap my head around just how messed up it is. The series tells the story of a crime like no other that took place in Erie, Pennsylvania, involving a pizza delivery man, a collar bomb, and a bank robbery.

The Innocent Man

Rating: 7.4/10 on IMDb

Why you need to watch it: The Innocent Man is based on a novel of the same name by John Grisham, but the thing about this story is that it's so twisted, you wouldn't be able to believe it if it wasn't real. The series follows several men who were falsely convicted and sat on Death Row for crimes that they didn't commit.
