While Canadians may not have the same opinion on various subjects, it seems the entire country can agree that Caillou is the worst. From his dramatic tantrums to his insufferable personality on the show, it doesn't seem like anyone actually enjoyed Caillou, whether they watched it as a child or as a parent.
It's a rare reaction considering that you would think Canadians would love the Canadian-produced show regardless due to Canada's constant struggle with inserting itself in the media big leagues amongst powerhouses such as the United States and the United Kingdom. With the show being one of the few Canadian made to have taken off internationally and also being adapted from a Quebec book series aimed at children, you would think Canadians would set aside their opinions. That would be the case is Caillou wasn't, for lack of better word, a literal demon.
Instead of being proud of the show, it seems that all Canadians do is apologize for it. With several petitions asking for the show to be cancelled flooding Change.org to it's IMDB rating of 4.3/10, it's clear there are a lot of people looking for that apology. One mother living in Michigan claimed on her petition that “children who watch this program tend to copy Caillou’s behaviour. Whining, demanding, throwing (themselves) on the floor kicking and screaming.”
It's not hard to believe that Caillou would have this kind of an effect on young and impressionable viewers considering in nearly every episode, Caillou has some sort of a fit that makes viewers' skin crawl. Seeing those kinds of tantrums constantly and Caillou's parents doing little to nothing to actually change his behaviour, it's not surprising that children try to follow in Caillou's footsteps.
Of course, when the subject arose on Reddit, many Canadians were quick to react to Caillou's continued rampage on the world:
Clearly, Canadians are really, truly sorry about Caillou and if anything we all probably hate it more than you do. Unfortunately for all of us, Caillou continues to be shown on TV and presumably is continuing to ruin the lives of parents across the globe. While it's doubtful Caillou's reign will ever truly be gone, we can only hope at some point his bald head will eventually leave our TV screens.
