It's definitely been a bumpy year for streaming service giant, Netflix. From upping their prices to removing secret features the company has upset a LOT of fans, and as a result, received quite a few canceled subscriptions. It's not all bad news though, according to the numbers, Netflix is actually more successful now than it ever has been before, and plans to keep the ball rolling into 2019.
Major companies are not that different from celebrities. Every little move they make is scrutinized by the public eye, and if fans and subscribers are unhappy with Netflix's decisions, they lash back... Big time. Of course, nobody is ever going to be totally satisfied, no matter what you do, so I think we have to cut Netflix some slack for trying their best, even if they do make some questionable decisions from time to time.
Since the year is coming quickly to an end, I think now is a great time to look back on everything that Netflix got right... and SO wrong in 2018:
This one can be considered both a blessing and a curse. There are definitely some shows on Netflix (...13 Reasons Why) that DON'T need to be on Netflix, and I would be more than happy to see them canceled. However, it seems as though Netflix doesn't actually listen to what it's viewers think about shows, and just cancels whatever they see fit.
For example, the hilarious show American Vandal was highly rated by critics and fans alike but still got the ax shortly after its second season premiered on Netflix. Perhaps one of the most problematic shows of the year, Insatiable, was renewed for a second season, despite viewers protesting and even going so far as to start a petition to get the show removed from Netflix.
Stealing from Competing Outlets
We live in a world where there is no shortage of streaming services. Hulu, Amazon, and Hayu, just to name a few, are all popular in their own rights, and offer unique options for streaming that you might not be able to find on Netflix. With other popular names like Disney, Apple, and WarnerMedia planning to have their streaming services up and running by 2019, it looks like Netflix will have some major competition come the new year.
One thing Netflix is notoriously good at though, is stealing content from its competing outlets and promising them access to a totally new audience thanks to Netflix's unique subscription demographic. Take the series Queer Eye, for example, which was brought over from Bravo and totally transformed into something that's now loved by people everywhere. Other popular series that have been transformed by Netflix include Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and The Great British Baking Show.
Making Reality TV Cool Again
I don't know about you guys, but I don't have cable, because I'm a broke university student. I do know that when I DO have cable though, I tend to use it to watch a ton of reality TV. Thanks to Netflix finally hopping on the bandwagon and making cooking shows cool again, my quality of life has substantially improved.
Shows like Nailed It, The Final Table, Queer Eye, and Shark Tank are all some of my favourites to put on in the background while I'm studying or cleaning the house. After striking a deal with Jeopardy, it looks pretty promising that Netflix will continue on its reality TV streak into the new year! Unfortunately, it definitely got beat by newer streaming service Hayu, which managed to strike a deal with the Kardashian family for rights to every season of their show, as well as other popular series' such as The Real Housewives.
Winning ALL the Emmys
If there's one thing Netflix for sure gets to celebrate this year, it's their outstanding number of Emmy nominations, and wins. With the sheer amount of original content that Netflix has been putting out, not many of us are surprised with their Emmy's takeover, but it's still impressive nonetheless. HBO had been the reigning champ of nominations for the last 17 years, but this year Netflix beat their 108 nominations with 112 of their own.
In the end, both HBO and Netflix walked away with a whopping 23 statuettes this year, but regardless of the tie, it was still an important moment for Netflix, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the TV industry.
Creating 'Buzzworthy' Content
One thing that's for sure in the entertainment industry - if you want to stay on top, you have to keep people on their toes, and if anyone knows how to do that, it's Netflix. Not only has the streaming service put out an astounding amount of true crime content that totally shocks viewers and leaves them on the edge of their seat, they've also created series like The Haunting of Hill House, On My Block, and The End of the F*****g World, which have been a big hit among viewers and critics alike.
Sure, sometimes Netflix can push the envelope too far, going back to shows like 13 Reasons Why and Insatiable, but regardless of the bad rep, they still kept people talking, and had people viewing the shows just to see what exactly was so shocking about them. It seems as though they're really playing on the "all publicity is good publicity" approach, and I have to admit, it's working for them pretty well.
