When Black Mirror: Bandersnatch came out a few weeks ago, it was like nothing any of us had ever seen before. The news of a Black Mirror movie had dedicated fans of the series feeling very excited, but when they found out it would be interactive, there was even more buzz in the air. Unfortunately, Bandersnatch didn't receive the best reviews from everyone. Despite this, Netflix has just announced that it will be adding more interactive shows to the streaming service.
Bandersnatch not only received critiques from fans, but it also received a trademark lawsuit filed against it from the people who created the Choose Your Own Adventure books we all loved so dearly as children. Despite this, Netflix will continue to explore the possibilities of bringing other interactive movies to the public.
Ted Sarando, Netflix's chief content officer, said, "We’ve got a hunch that [the interactive format] works across all kinds of storytelling and some of the greatest storytellers in the world are excited to dig into it."
It will be interesting to see how Netflix plans on adding the interactive format to its other shows. Because Black Mirror is so tech-based, and the plot lines were so well thought out, the interactive format had its fans trying to figure out every possible outcome possible. It's hard to say whether other shows will be able to do the same thing.
Because Netflix keeps its numbers so tightly under wrap, nobody really knows how well Bandersnatch actually performed. The creator of Bandersnatch has said he thinks it's a good thing, as "it's fairly irrelevant in the grand scheme of things." Whatever Netflix decides to produce next, it will be interesting to see how it differs from Bandersnatch!
