2019 just got a whole lot better. Earlier this week, Priyanka Chopra took a break from her wedding celebrations to chat with Ellen DeGeneres about her upcoming projects. Priyanka revealed she's in talks to develop and star in a movie based on the Netflix docu-series Wild Wild Country. Commence your freaking out because we're totally doing the same! Wild Wild Country was one of our fave Netflix binges of 2018.
Wild Wild Country premiered on Netflix in March 2018. The six-part documentary series told the true story of a cult that relocated from India to rural Oregon in the 1980s. The group, known as the Rajneesh, followed the teachings of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Bhagwan gained both notoriety and popularity for his free-love philosophies.
Behind every great man is a greater woman running shit. Priyanka will play Bhagwan's right hand (wo)man Ma Anand Sheela. She was, first, his personal assistant and, later, president of the Rajneesh Foundation International.
Tasked with overseeing the construction of the group's utopian society, Rajneeshpuram, Sheela refused to let anything get in her way. Not the residents of nearby Antelope, Oregon. Not other members of the cult. Not even the U.S. government. "If they're not aware of my determination, I think they're stupid," Sheela once said.
Now in her late-60s, the once "very trusted lieutenant" is hiding out in Switzerland. Priyanka told Ellen she is excited about playing this "devious" woman. The movie is still in its early stages, but we already can't wait to see Priyanka Chopra's take on Wild Wild Country's Ma Anand Sheela. Haven't watched this docu-series yet but already have weekend plans? "Tough titties," as Sheela would say. Make this Netflix binge a top priority.
