Fall is finally arriving and the spooky season of October is only a couple short weeks away! That means Halloween is creeping closer and closer. It will start getting dark earlier and earlier, people will be dressing up as scary monsters and all the creepy crawlies and murderers will come out to play!

Now is the perfect time to get into the Halloween mood and the best way to do that is to watch movies! There are some classic Halloween and scary movies that everyone loves to watch around this time of year. Netflix has a ton of great options and while you might know some of these, some might be completely new to you. 

The movies on this list range from terrifying horror films that you have to watch with the lights on, to suspensful thrillers that will keep on the edge of your seat, to light hearted animated classics! There's something for everyone to enjoy this Halloween season! 

Young Frankenstein

When you think of creepy Halloween characters one of the first ones that come to mind is Frankenstein. The original movie made back in 1974 is completely black and white and totally authentic! You can watch the real story of how this character came to be on Netflix right now! 

The Babadook

The Babadook was raved about when it first hit the big screen because of how truly terrifying it was. The story shows a woman and her son after her husband's sudden death. Her son starts to fear a monster that he thinks is lurking in the house and eventually the mother starts to realize a sinister presence is there as well. 

Cult Of Chucky

We've all heard about the creepy killer doll named Chucky. The first time this terrifying character showed up on screen was back in 1988 in the film 'Childs Play'. This movie isn't available on Netflix but one of the more recent sequels is and it's just as scary! 

The Ritual

This is a pretty recent film that came out last year that should definitely be added to your Halloween movie list. A group of college friends head out into the woods to perform a ritual for one of their friends. After they sense a menacing presence following them. 

Coraline

While this film is amazing and super charming it is also super creepy at the same time. The book completely freaked me out when I was younger. The story is of a young girl name Coraline who finds a door to an alternate universe in her new home. Here she finds the same version of her world but better, or so she thinks!

This movie takes place 6 years after aliens have invaded Earth which is a new take on the usual alien-invasion type movies. An American journalist agrees to escort a scared tourist through an infected zone in Mexico and you can guess that they run into a few problems along the way. 

The Invitation

This odd, slow building horror movie follows a man and his girlfriend when they decide to attend a dinner party at his ex-wife and her new boyfriends house. The movie is all about moments that are definitely off but everyone is trying to convince themselves it's fine until it's too late. 

The Nightmare

This documentary horror film that addresses the terrifying reality of sleep paralysis. This disorder comes with hallucinations, waking up with an inability to move, and so much more. This movie talks to real people who deal with this every night and how scary it really is. 

Train To Busan

This Korean film is all about zombies on a train. If you're into those kinds of obvious yet super terrifying horror movies, this is a great one. An outbreak of zombies starts sweeping the country and a father tries to get his daughter to safety by taking the train. 

Bam Stoker's Dracula

Filmed back in 1992 this movie is all about the centuries old infamous vampire, Dracula. Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister's fiancee and obviously start some real problems at the same time. This classic film is about as Halloween as it gets on Netflix!

Moon

An astronaught is stuck in space for 3 years alone which obviously takes some serious psychological tolls on his mental state. He begins to experience some strange physical symptoms that suggest there might be some more sinister motives to his time on the moon. 

Creep

Wow. That's all I have to say about this movie. Like the title says, it's totally creepy so you've been warned! A videographer answers an ad for someone to come out and film a full day of this man's life who is supposedly dying. He starts to notice some odd behaviour but I won't tell you the rest! 

Gerald's Game

This movie is based on one of Stephen King's classic horror novels so you know it's going to be good. A couple go out to their remote cabine and decide to spice things up in the bedroom, hence the handcuffs. The husband has a heart attack in the middle of the act and the wife is trapped to the bedframe.

Another movie on Netflix based on a Steven King novel, this movie is pretty scary. In the year 1922 a farmer conspires with his son to murder his wife for financial gain. He doesn't realize that with this there will be serious consequences.

The first installment of The Conjuring made me scared of the dark for months after I watched it so I can't imagine how scary the second one is. A couple that deal with paranormal activity travel to help a single mother with 4 children in her house that is being controlled by a vengeful spirit. 

I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This movie is so classic and if you haven't seen it already, go watch it right now. Although not the original film made in 1974, the one available on Netflix is from 2003 and stars Jessica Biel. A group of travellers find themselves in a town being stalked by a crazed killer with a chainsaw and his psychopathic family. 

The Grudge

This cult film made in 2004 starring Sarah Michelle Geller is such a classic and perfect for this Halloween season. An American nurse working in Tokyo is exposed to a strange supernatural curse that locks the person in a rage before killing them and moving onto the next person. 

Boys In The Trees

This movie is perfect for Halloween because the movie is actually set on Halloween day! On Halloween in 1997 two skater kids journey through their memories, dreams and fears in a terrifying and surreal film. 

Veronica

This movie was released on Netflix last year and it was a huge hit because of how scary it was. The movie takes place in Madrid, Spain in 1991 where a teen girl finds herself being surrounded by a supernatural force. This happens after a group of friends and her used a Ouiji board.

By now every single person has heard of The Human Centipede, whether you've actually watched it or not. The story is basically of a creepy mad scientist who enacts his wildest fantasies by attaching 3 human beings together by their gastric systems. It's super gross but it's become a cult classic somehow.

I mean, after 4 installments of this series of horror movies you can't expect much but they did their best with this one. In the 4th movie it's been 10 years since Sidney Prescott was first targeted by the ghost-faced killer and he's back again. At this point they're basically making fun of themselves so it's okay to laugh.

Hotel Transylvania

If you're not up for all these psychological thrillers and supernatural horror films keep it light with this kids classic! In this film Dracula owns an up-scale resort far away from humans. When a boy discovers the resort and a whole lot of entertaining drama happens!

This movie is a super intense thriller so get ready! After a couple adopt an orphaned boy they realize that his dreams manifest into reality. When he's dreaming they discover the beauty of his imagination but if his dreams become real, so do his nightmares.
