With seemingly endless months of cold, long winter nights ahead of us, we're desperately searching for something to binge watch while it's -27°C outside.
Considering Stranger Things and Game of Thrones both don't appear for at least another year, our binge-able Netflix options are limited. But if this new Natalie Portman movie is anything to go by, we may want to start turning our attention to the big screen instead.
Annihilation, a sci-fi thriller set to be released in February, dropped its first teaser back in September and instantly gained praise as one of the best, most intriguing trailers of 2017. And their latest one is even better.
Essentially, the film is about a group of scientists who explore a strange part of world where “occurrences” happen. It stars Natalie Portman (obviously) who has to save her husband, played by Oscar Isaac (who you may recognise as Star Wars' pilot Poe), from mutated aliens.
Portman's character, a biologist named Lena, volunteers to figure out what the hell is going on with an all-woman expedition into the affected zone - a team that includes an anthropologist, linguist, and psychologist.
There's also a weird mysterious creature/shimmer/force-thing. It's difficult to describe, but it looks pretty awesome. Essentially, Isaac's mysterious job ends up getting him up close and personal with this weird force thing and a team of badass women investigate. It's basically Jurassic Park meets Stranger Things and we love it already.
If this sounds like your sort of thing and you're interested in knowing what happens before the February 23rd release date, the film is based on Jeff VanderMeer's weird horror novel of the same title. We've checked, it's at Indigo for $13.
In the meantime, start popping your popcorn. Annihilation hits Canadian theatres in two months.
