Only Three Leaders Are Taking Part In The First Federal Election Debate Next Week

The first election debate in Canada is happening next week. The debate is being put on by Maclean's and Citytv more than a month before the federal election. But as of now only three leaders will actually be debating.

The National Leaders Debate is scheduled for Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET and will be moderated by Maclean's journalist Paul Wells. The debate will last for two hours and be solely in English.

Justin Trudeau's attendance hasn't been confirmed so at the moment only Elizabeth May, Jagmeet Singh and Andrew Scheer will be debating. Though, Maclean's says Trudeau's invitation is still open.

This debate will focus on economy, foreign policy, Indigenous issues and energy and the environment. After the main parts of each segment, all leaders will get the chance to say a closing statement on the subject.

Trudeau is the only leader to have not confirmed attendance yet because only he and the leaders for the Conservative Party, the Green Party and the NDP were invited to debate.

The leaders of the People's Party of Canada and Bloc Québécois are seemingly not invited.

However, the debate will go on as planned regardless of if Trudeau attends or not.

Maclean's also did an early leaders debate for the 2015 federal election and cites it as being very successful.

Regardless of who debates, it'll be a good chance for Canadians to see where the leaders stand on the four topics that will be debated on.

The event will take place in Toronto but be broadcasted on TV and online across Canada.

You can watch the debate on TV or online at Maclean's website, Facebook page or Youtube channel.
