Florida Drive-In Theater Gets Transformation From A Massive Indoor Theme Park

With movie theaters and theme parks likely closed until the summer, many amusement spots are looking for a way to bring in people and revenue. In recent weeks, there has been a surge of interest in a classic, movie outing experience. The owners of a large indoor theme park are transforming their parking lot into a Florida drive-in theater.

Dezerland Park in Miami will officially start hosting drive-in movie nights every Friday through July 3, beginning Friday, May 22.

They plan to construct a 22-foot-by-40-foot screen in its parking lot, but the sound from the movies has been upgraded from the portable speaker boxes to transmit from your car radios. Dezerland is propping up the experience by including food options that can be ordered through a phone app and delivered to your window.

The drive-in will practice social distancing guidelines set forth by Miami-Dade County and North Miami officials. Cars will be spaced 6 feet apart, allowing a maximum of 150 vehicles per film. In March, the park initially closed in an attempt to tamp down the spread of the novel coronavirus. During the closure, the indoor park has brainstormed numerous ways in which it can continue to bring in guest in a safe way while waiting for the OK to reopen.

The pop-up, drive-thru movie theater pop up will feature kid-friendly offerings like Jurassic Park and Sonic The Hedgehog, but the full movie lineup has not been released yet.

Opened in 2018, Dezerland is the largest indoor attraction in South Florida. They opened an Orlando location back in 2018  The owner of the amusement park, real estate mogul Michael Dezer, told the Miami Herald that, if the Dezerland Drive-In does well, others could pop-up around the county.

Currently, South Florida has one other drive-in theater at the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop Flea Market, which reopened on May 18. The conversion of Dezerland is potentially a second option for those who are looking for a retro experience this weekend.
