Elon Musk & His Girlfriend Grimes Share Their Canadian Backgrounds In Common
They've been together since 2018.
Often times in Hollywood, a couple will hook up that might make you question how the unlikely pairing met and fell in love. It's been a little while since the Tesla, Inc. CEO and musical artist first debuted last year. Though they work in completely different sectors, Grimes and Elon Musk's relationship began from a tweet and they both have Canadian backgrounds.
The two revealed they were dating in May 2018, and though they mainly stay out of the spotlight, they do sometimes show up to events together.
When Musk revealed his Tesla Cybertruck last month, he used a female model that prompted fans of the musician to question if it was her. According to Business Insider, the model's tattoo shared a striking resemblance to one Grimes got in 2017.
Though Musk was born in South Africa, he, including one for Canada which he received in 1989. He moved to Kingston, Ontario when he was 17 to attend Queen's University, but ended up finishing his undergrad degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
The 48-year-old's Canadian nationality also comes from his mother Maye who was born in Regina, Saskatchewan but moved to South Africa where she eventually started her family.
Though she doesn't get a ton of media attention, Grimes has actually been in the entertainment industry since 2010 when her first album, Geidi Primes, came out.
The 31-year-old was born in Vancouver with the birth name Claire Elise Boucher. She went to post-secondary school in Montreal at McGill University and studied music.
The same month they started dating, Grimes changed her legal name to "'c' as in the speed of light" which was thanks to Musk.
Despite the name change, most still refer to her as Grimes. Her first tour was in Canada, where she co-headlined with Pop Winds for Halfaxa Tour.
According to Billboard, the artist's fifth album, Miss_Anthrop0cene, is currently complete and set for release sometime in 2020.
The two first met on Twitter, according to Business Insider, when "Musk was planning to make a joke about artificial intelligence — specifically, about the Rococo Basilisk character in her Flesh Without Blood video — and discovered she had beaten him to the punch."
Their first public appearance was at the Met Gala in 2018, and Business Insider also reported that there was a brief moment that sparked rumours of a breakup after they unfollowed each other's social media accounts.
Since then, everything has been smoothed over and the two Canadians are still together.
