Want to seem like a local? If you’ve ever wondered what some of the best spots to visit in the city are, up and coming actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan’s GTA favourites will reveal exactly where you should be spending your time during your next visit to the area.

If you’ve checked out Netflix over the past few weeks, you may have seen a new series called Never Have I Ever, about a young Indian-American girl named Dev who has big dreams of getting into a prestigious university, boosting her social status, and losing her virginity, among other things.

The Netflix original comes from the mind of Mindy Kaling, and when it came to casting Dev, The Office alum wanted to make sure that she found the perfect actress. As it turns out Mississauga’s own Ramakrishnan was the star she was looking for.

Never Have I Ever has blown up since it premiered on April 27, but the show’s 18-year-old Canadian lead has stayed true to her roots despite her newfound fame.

In a recent interview with Netflix, Ramakrishnan opened up about some of her favourite things about her hometown, other Canadian celebs that she’s met, and much more!

Before she was discovered by Kaling, the Tamil-Canadian star was attending Meadowvale Secondary School. In her interview, she revealed that there’s a great shawarma place in the neighbourhood and that the school also has a great library.

Ramakrishnan also shared that she has big love for fellow GTA-based star Simu Liu, who’s going to be pushing boundaries as Marvel’s first-ever East Asian superhero. What she was surprised to find out though, is that Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell also hails from the suburb of Mississauga.

When it comes to what she loves the most about the area, the 18-year-old was quick to gush about the city’s food, how alive it always is.

As far as Tim Hortons goes, Ramakrishnan’s usual order is a white hot chocolate with a chai tea bag added, because who doesn’t love a little bit of spice?!
