It took a while for a lot of YouTubers to become relevant. There was this huge barrier between celebrities and YouTubers, and now if you have a following, you're considered a celebrity. However, there is a significant difference between the two. When you're a celebrity and something happens, it can usually cool down after a while or even help out your career. Jordyn Woods actually benefited from her cheating scandal. But with YouTubers, if you have a scandal, you can lose millions of subscribers, brand deals, and loyal friends. Since we're all so focused on the James Charles scandal right now, you've probably forgotten about the craziest YouTube scandals of all time.
James Charles isn't the only person who has lost the trust of his millions of subscribers. And he definitely won't be the last. In fact, scandals took place on YouTube even before James was ever a YouTuber. Some of these you'll remember, and some of these you'll hope to forget.
Logan Paul wasn't the first YouTuber to have a scandal, but his was one of the biggest. In 2018, Logan Paul uploaded a video called "We found a dead body in the Japanese Suicide Forest...". Thinking nothing of it, he posted the video and became the most hated YouTuber overnight. The video showed Jake and his team in Aokigahara, which is a forest where people take their own lives. He ended up apologizing and taking a break from vlogging.
Sam & Nia
Sam and Nia are YouTubers who have had a couple of pretty big scandals. The first scandal was when Sam surprised his wife by telling her she was pregnant. The video went viral, but days later they revealed she miscarried. Their fans were quick to note that this was fake and they lost trust in them. However, a few days after that, news broke that Sam had an account on Ashley Madison, which was a site that let people cheat on their partners. The two took a break from vlogging, but are still together today.
This was the most recent scandal before James Charles scandal, and it's one of the biggest ones. Olivia Jade is a YouTuber that does beauty, fashion, and lifestyle videos. However, she hasn't posted in a couple of months due to this scandal. Last September, Olivia enrolled in USC, and it came out a couple of months ago that she got in because her parents bribed $500,000 to get her to be recruited on the rowing team.
When this scandal broke, her mom, Lori Loughlin, who is best known for her role as Aunt Becky on Full House, deleted all of her social media. She and her husband were both arrested and were both charged, although they're waiting for their sentencing. Multiple brands dropped Olivia Jade and Lori Loughlin, and Olivia has yet to come back to social media.
Shane Dawson is one of the OGs of YouTube, but he's also had a few scandals. Before he was a channel that did series and conspiracy theories, he was a pretty controversial channel. In a podcast years ago, Shane made a joke about looking up "naked babies" online and he said he found the results "sexy". In 2018, a video was put up online titled "I think Shane Dawson is a pedophile. Here's my proof." The video has since been taken down, but it showed the clip of him talking about the naked babies.
Shane responded to the video with his own video, where he played the full clip of him talking about the babies. In the video, Shane says, "I cannot believe I'm having to make this video". He ends it with saying he's not "not a f***ing pedophile".
Ah, the freshest one out of all of them. This past Friday, YouTuber Tati Westbrook uploaded a video that was titled "BYE SISTER ..." which talked about all the reasons why she's not friends or doesn't want to associate with James Charles ever again. In the video, Tati reveals that James manipulated her, is a predator to straight boys, and that he takes things way too far.
Her 43-minute video was enough for fans to unsubscribe and unfollow James. Since Friday, James has lost 3 million YouTube followers and 1 million Instagram followers. Several people have come forward since then to say that James reached out to their boyfriends over DM, who he knows are straight. Fans were not the only ones shocked by this, but celebrities were too. A ton of celebrities unfollowed James after this scandal broke.
James made an apology video to Tati, but has yet to come back to social media after posting it. Fans are even more fed up with him because Tati's 43-minute video didn't have any ads, but James' 8-minute video did.
In 2017, Austin Jones was arrested for child pornography. He had an acapella cover YouTube channel with over 500,000 subscribers. From August 2016 to May 2017, he had been in contact with two minors over Facebook. He had asked one of them to prove they were a fan by sending him sexual videos. He pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
